Meditation - Imagine A Rectangle And Keep Halving It

2 posts in this topic

... until it becomes reduced to the invisible (in mind's eye).

When I was about 9 years old I was practicing this technique. I’d start off just like any other meditation. I'd sit down in lotus position, and while being completely still, imagine a rectangle. Then I would start halving it and in the process I’d have to make sure that I’m fully focused on it. Just like focusing on breathing in mindfulness mediation, but this time I would focus on the rectangle and make sure I am fully aware of its size. Eventually it becomes very hard to keep up. Small speckle loses its shape. Then I would start off again.

I’m back into mediation mindfulness practice for almost 6 months. Now I’m 35. Just wondering if anyone is familiar with this technique that I was practicing as a kid. Can not remember the book where I picked it up from. Also would be interested any comments on this technique. Does it do any good?

Thanks

Steve

I have always wondered about this, but never used it as a meditation technique.  The thing I used to ponder was if you close a door only halfway and keep repeating with the space left over, when does the door meet the frame?  Or just keep dividing a number by 2, when does it reach 0?  I think its meant to make us question infinity.  But rather than thinking of infinity as moving outwards or expansion, we can think of infinity as also moving inwards/contraction also.  That's my view anyway
