The Trajectory For Self Development

9 posts in this topic

I was having some insights during my meditation yesterday and this thought came to mind.

The trajectory of self development should start at an early stage in life. People come full circle, they go through a lot, they give into everything bad, they fall into traps and get involved with a lot of wrong things in life and finally they have enough profound realizations and they start sifting through all the ways of life, and start gaining a perspective. By this time, they're pretty old already and they have missed out on too much. They sometimes regret the naivety that caused them to lead astray in their youth.

Therefore, it's important to start your Pd journey at an early stage in life, as early as in teenage years. Because it takes a long time to hone your skills and come to a level ground.

Well, I missed out a full decade of my life, now that my teenage years are behind me.

However I'm still thankful that I get to begin my self-development journey now rather than ten more years down the road.

@Loreena And all this IF they even stable on personal development. That said is not meant to bring down the people that found it later but to highlight the fact that the earlier you get on board the better. Heck, even the fact you are on board it is a blessing.

Now that I approach it from a meta perspective I realize how important it is, this is the stuff we should be doing in school, not the bs math and physics we will never use again.

I had an insight yesterday as well that you can probably raise enlightened kids if you do it the right way as the "self" has not been yet created.

The ancient civilization were so much better at contemplating, sadly we have kind of lost this or it's only done in academic setting.

@Loreena Very true! I think this story kind of applies to what you say. So basically five years ago a friend of mine had a pretty rough experience on psychedelics. He had a pretty rough youth, his mother left in his teens and he didn't really have the support he needed. Because of this he was easily turned to drinking, smoking and doing unhealthy things to hide away the problems he was running from. That day where he had a very bad experience or basically was shown everything he has been doing wrong was a clear turning point in his life.

I compare this experience to early PD because the earlier you begin to see you own behavior the better you will be able to adapt long-term.  :)

Nasty addictions or destructive behaviour can be very hard to get rid off, so early self-awareness and setting clear goals is golden.

Is this true for you?  Did YOU start early in life?

Yes

I don't know who all these "people" are but does any of this apply to YOU and your life experiences?   Are YOU gaining a perspective?  If so, what is it?

The people I see around me and those I've been sharing my journey with.

OUCH! Does any of this apply to YOU and your life?  Are you willing to speak for and about your own life and PD journey?

It doesn't apply to me, though it does apply partially. I went through a lot of emotional problems before I started my P.D path. Wish I had found it before, I could have been wiser and saved some trouble. It's a part of my insight so its speculative  that's why it's open for discussion.

I'd be more interested in YOUR PD journey and how it's going or has gone than in a lecture or speech on what unknown others do or fail to do.  At least you can be an AUTHORITY on your own life and events.   Please speak for your self.

This is not a lecture. Its a post for discussion. It's not a speech either. They are not unknown others. These are life experiences. One cannot prove such things and shouldn't even be expected to prove it. You cannot look at every word through a microscope. Its a futile overanalysis. My life is not just my life. Its connected to others as well. We share experiences which are sometimes common. There is no mandatory rule that I should only speak for myself. Its all relatable. Those who relate will share their experiences and Those who can't relate can state otherwise.

Btw it's a little difficult to quote you.

Please try single quoting.

@Loreena Early age?  Maybe.  If I didn't screw up and experiment so much earlier in life I don't think I would be as wise now.  People too focused in life run the risk of being raised in a monastery or bubble and never make the mistakes that are necessary for full and deep wisdom later on in life.  Youth is meant to be exploratory, egoic, and damaging.  Otherwise what context do you really have to grow away from?  So yeah, be careful with sheltering yourself too much when you are young.  Make a bunch of mistakes when you are young so you can get at the truth as you age.  Then you grow into something truly wise.  Someone who's been there, seen that, done that, and overcome that.  You'll dwarf all the sheltered kids in wisdom by a mile.

Happy I found out about PD during my teenager years, fixing my anxiety problems at this age will hopefully help me a lot moving forward into the life. I feel like this is something that should be taught at school, what more is important than the well being of one self?

I finally learned that within me
there lay an invincible summer.

@Joseph Maynor  I do agree with certain things you wrote. But too many mistakes could ruin a life. A balance needs to be struck. Also the pd journey itself is littered with its own twists and turns, confusions, realizations and experiences. Its not a sheltered approach always. But some grounding does help save a lot of trouble and reduces the risk of committing huge errors, mistakes that are sometimes irreparable or irredeemable.
