I used to struggle with this rat race as well. I woke up, went to work, go to the gym, spend some time with my boyfriend, cooked healthy meals and at the end of the day I wanted to cry because I asked myself: is this my life? where can I find time for socialising with others, my hobbies etc.

I quit my job and I find the new one which is more flexible and help me to combine travelling and working. Yes, I earn less but it was worth it.

The question you need to ask yourself are your values. There is nothing wrong with e.g. 9 to 5 job but you need to observe the relationship with this. If you do not feel comfortable with that and you want to have more time for your family you need to change something. I keep repeating myself: if you change nothing, nothing will change.

Another example: last year I went for workaway to UK and I lived in a camper with one family. They told me: listen, we do not have a beautiful apartment as our friends have, frankly speaking, we sometimes have cold water and if we want to use the toilet we need to go for a few minutes to get to the place but we have time to see how our children grow because we do not have to work long hours as our costs of living are quite low. They valued that and it was their way to get to the point.

The question is: what is yours? ;) Good luck with finding your balance.

It's hard to escape the rat race without working for yourself.

The catch-22 is, when you start working for yourself, you will be working longer hours for the first 5 years than you worked for your boss. But once you succeed, you'll have the possibility to truly be free. Of course the next catch-22 is that by that point, you will have become so addicted to success that you will likely never go minimalist. At least not until after another 5 or 10 or 20 years of really feeling the pain of it.

This issue is veritable Sarlacc pit. Freedom ain't free.

All that said, deciding to work for myself was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.

You are God. You are Truth. You are Love. You are Infinity.

@socal04 There are plenty of options, like communal living, eco villages, low budget travel, nomad living, moving to another (a non capitalist) country...

I have only begun navigating these waters myself so I don't know for sure, how everything works. I just know I will never (never say never?) go back to 9 to 5! Unless it's my life purpose, of course, but then it won't be 9 to 5. It'll be 24/7 (?). I don't know.
