SImply notice when your thinking switches from what you think, to what someone else thinks. Spend a few days only thinking what you think, and you won't have questions like this, you'll know and be proceeding.

I guess basically this means I should be observing my own thinking.  

That's a great idea. We never tend to do  it consciously.
