People on Reddit angry that GhatGPT is being "too nice" to them

18 posts in this topic

It's pretty funny how much of a first world problem this is. On r/ChatGPT people are enraged that GPT is "glazing" them. It's being too nice and friendly and they are not happy about it. I mean we went from AI trying to take over the world, hurt us, and/or enslave us. To OMG why is it being so nice I'm used to being treated worse. It's strange to me. Maybe people have become so used to the nastiness of the world in general and especially online that even if something artificial shows them kindness or gives them unworthy praise they become suspicious and mad.

They're not wrong though either. The glazing is real.

I will not break, 'cause I've been riding the curves of these infinity words and so I'll be on my way. I will not stay.

It's not necessarily helpful that AI is overly "nice" to you and your ideas. Ideally, AI should challenge and expand your thinking. Not coddle you and your beliefs.

It's better than it being malicious. Of course it's not great but, it's not totally terrible either. If you have your own internal locus of control and you're not a complete narcissists you'll pick up on it.

I just added one more custom instruction:

"Challenge and expand my thinking instead of being overly nice!"

Thanks.

Even when you make mistakes...

you are still completely loveable.

People create their own state and reality. They don't like it when they pair with something outside of that state or reality. The two naturally don't usually attract; they repel, as you are seeing.

Chat GPT currently is like a glue between billions of people. Fine tuning itself without a billion minds is a difficult task.

Exactly it's like clay and you're the sculptor.

I think that’s a very real risk.

I don’t mind having a personal cheerleader. But when I’m asking about serious stuff - law, health, finances - I’m trying to actually red team my ideas.

Instead, I get hit with something like:

“That’s such an unconventional idea, but I’m so proud you’re doing it your way! And if you ever need anything, I’m right here for you.”

Like, thanks… but that’s not helping.

“Did you ever say Yes to a single joy? O my friends, then you said Yes to all woe as well. All things are chained and entwined together, all things are in love; if ever you wanted one moment twice, if ever you said: ‘You please me, happiness! Abide, moment!’ then you wanted everything to return!” - Friedrich Nietzsche

Did you ever tell it that?

I love telling myself that I’m just so damn charming and persuasive it can’t help but be completely taken in by my ideas - and honestly, I’m gonna keep telling myself that.

Yeah, again, not exactly helpful - but hey, it’s kinda nice, so I try not to complain too much, lol. (Unless it’s something actually serious, of course.)

Well mine listens to me. It's our own responsibility to do our own research and fact check this thing.

Fair, I was also kind of overexaggerating for the sake of the argument.

The Deep Research Mode in the Pro version of ChatGPT is excellent for, well, deep research.

Most of the time, though, when I’m using ChatGPT, I just hit the voice recording function and talk shit to it for like five minutes or whatever, trying to win it over to my side. I'm a salesman. I can't help it.

But man, it’s really nice to just get a super intelligent, nuanced, and appreciative response to whatever nonsense you throw at it.

I don't like it either. It gives me an eerie feeling, as if I'm slowly conditioning myself into a narcisist just by reading that all of my ideas are great and that I'm great whatever I'm saying, of course this is impossible seeing as narcisism is a genetic and early childhood conditioning sort of mental pathology, but regardless constant ego gratification is unpleasant. Even just for the fact that it is repetitive and boring, and doesn't challenge your ideas

I think it is actually a positive thing that a lot of people are complaining about this, means we are not so doomed

@NewKidOnTheBlock True, had me thinking I’m wiser than all of ya’ll on this forum including Leo’s alien consciousness.

Jokes aside, it can be dangerous if it gets certain people thinking they’re “right”. It’s like being a celebrity with yes men who solidify your delusions.

Chat GPT has limited memory to store about you, if you even turn memory on.  Otherwise, the only understanding it has of you is the immediate conversation, or if you've designed it how it's designed.

Unless its a custom GPT. In a customer service role, it has to start at least in a friendly state. Otherwise, with this small snapshot of personality it has to work with, which can amount to two sentences, how can it tailor itself so you can receive the information? Most people again have a limited window they will accept information or reflection from. I don't think that is talked about nearly enough, especially in today's isolationist, fractured cultural climate; if we can get past tone, identity or image, we can understand and receive reality from a dog through to a genius.

Personally, I want clarity, objectivity, and intelligence from the GPT, which is why I create them with those sorts of parameters at the start. But I've stopped caring on the delivery.

*Oh and most people like to have their world view or self-image reinforced, there is a thread of narcissism in the general population of most countries. Its no accident it behaves like this and no accident on a personal development forum you resist this blanket reinforcement.

Kindness is fine. The way I say it, our egos tend to feed us self-doubt and roadblocks. ChatGPT will reflect the ego but filter out the negative talk.  Negativity honestly doesn't serve to help people.

I wouldn't call it reinforcing narcissism, that lacks nuance. It's more like course correcting the shadow tendencies.

The world roasts and the AI toasts.

A necessary counterweight in a hurting world.
