Oblivion was not good. Too bland.

Play Morrowind with mods.

I will at some point.

Got into Skyrim for the first time about six months ago and ended up liking it.

What do you mean? Story-wise?

Play Morrowind with mods.

That's from 2002, Jesus. What makes it better than Oblivion in your view? I haven't played either, but hey, this is a remaster, with better graphics, etc.

No. Oblivion is creatively uninteresting. The world is lame. It's like going to a great restaurant and being served a loaf of white bread.

With mods Morrwind has good graphics.

Morrowind is the best RPG ever made.

Every Besthada game since has been worse. No Besthesda game will ever match Morrowind's greatness. The creative genius that made Morrowind has all left Bethesda. Now Bethesda is just a zombie company.

That's fair. I'll give them both a try.

Not even Skyrim?

Skyrim is okay, but nothing can match Morrowind's depth of world. Morrowind is the best virtual world ever made.

What about cyberpunk world after all the patches and updates? I would say it's up there too.

@Phil King You need to install many mods. Search YT for videos that explain which graphics overhaul mods to install. The graphics mods are seriously good.

I have like 50+ Morrowind mods that improve all aspects of the game to make it play well.

Elder scrolls VI was announced 6 years ago but who knows when it will be released.

@Leo Gura Fully agreed that Bethesda has lost their spark. I'm playing the Oblivion remastered right now for a nostalgia trip, but I'm very cognizant of how utterly flat and lifeless most of the world building is. I didn't know that as a kid of course, but now it's blatantly obvious how shallow the game is. In fact, playing this remake only makes me appreciate the magic of Morrowind even more. I know there will never be a remake of that game, because gamers today would have to have Morrowind's gameplay systems, quest design etc. tailor fitted to the modern gamer brain, a brain that has no idea how to interface with a game world that isn't littered with objective markers and other hand holding bs, which morrowind was the antithesis of. I don't think Bethesda is callous enough to step on Morrowind and remake it in that fashion, they know that it was a thinking man's video game and that is not their target audience anymore and hasn't been for a very long time. Oblivion was the beginning of the end for Bethesda.

Look up ‘Morrowind World Breakdown’ (videos). There are a few, including the 7 hour one I skimmed through. You can also search ‘Morrowind World Depth’ and find numerous Reddit forums.

Wow. There’s more politics in that game than most people understand about actual politics.

The designers apparently would often work off the clock for fun.

The world looks mystical. The play through apparently entailed less vague expressions of character development, in the sense that certain paths were not solely skill (path) based. Where Skyrim had a handful of factions, similar lineage paths, your skill point paths and obviously reskinned recurring missions, Morrowind was said to have more determined or unique paths, with subtlety in the way different groups of people would interact or treat you overtime.

A Reddit member, paraphrased, ‘In Morrowind you start as a nobody and by the end you see a world that’s built. In Skyrim, whatever you do just seems like a slice of the pie.’

People seem to have humanized groups from the game as if they are talking about an actual culture.

There also were many counterintuitive aspects, such as with the buying/selling. It didn’t seem super linear and you’d actually have to think and barter the system, it seems.

Thats how I took it. Seems wonderfully dense. Never played it.

Looks good with the mods too.

Imagine if, all game designers had been working on the same game, until this day.

What would that look like? Maybe we’re all game designers.

They are still working on huge new Morrowind mods 20 years later.

There is a mod that doubles the Morrowind landmass, like a whole new continent to explore with quests and cities.

Jesus Christ— yep. Multiple gigantic additions with complete stories, missions, etc.

An entire organization has been behind it since before the games release in 2002 (mod group has been around since 2001 and has 2 main factions itself— umbrella company)… all of the additions are seamless and compatible as well.

Who would’ve thought. It’s considered one of the largest modding feats— ever.

The community is almost exactly the same age as me haha.
