Oblivion Remastered Just Released

60 posts in this topic

You have no idea how revolutionary Morrowind was back in 2002. It was like discovering a whole new dimension to gaming. Nowadays it's all taken for granted thanks to Skyrim and copy-cat open-world games.

But still nothing comes close to the world of Morrowind.

If you can't stand playing it, you can just watch videos of others playing it.

@Basman I'm not a boomer by any means, but I can happily jump on and enjoy Morrowind & the classic Fallout games without any mods. I prefer their aesthetic ofc, but that's not what makes them so amazing to experience, the gameplay is just so much more in-depth and nuanced than anything being made today imo. The level of ingenuity in terms of choice making, combat, writing, world building atmosphere and the various gameplay systems struck a chord with me after allowing myself to get lost in the games. I think maybe people today can't get into Morrowind and other CRPG's of that calibre and era is because most gamers have been trained to expect dopamine surging gameplay mechanics within the first few minutes of play, whereas Morrowind and Fallout 1 & 2 require way more patience to reap some form of long term deeper pleasure out of the experience. I didn't even play these games when they came out either, I just delved into them in my teens out of curiosity and fell in love with everything they were doing. Modded Morrowind is cool and all but the base game has never gotten old for me. Every minute of Oblivion Remastered that I play right now just makes me appreciate Morrowind's intricacies more and more. Honestly the only reason I'm still playing Oblivion is because I like to shatter my rose tinted glasses with these nostalgia trip type rereleases to sort of prove to myself that they really are as middling as I remember them being.

I was wondering why this game isn't considered a full-blown remake. This video highlights why:

Seems like the AI and fundamental game mechanics are still in the 2000s. As someone unfamiliar with Bethesda games, I think I'll pass on this. Besides, the only open-world games I'm into are from Rockstar and FromSoft.

It's a shame because I was really hoping this would redeem Starfield since it flopped. Bethesda still Bethesda, I guess.

it's ugly now.

It looks pretty good. The problem is it's all so bland by original design. It's like sexing up a piece of white bread.

HD white bread is not what makes a game worth playing.

HD bricks and crates is not why people love games.

The graphics actually look insanely good.

Imagine a Morrowind remaster that looks this good. OMG!

I bought it 2 days ago out of impulse, nostalgia and the amazing graphics.

I forgot that Oblivion just plain sucked as a game and the only reason I played it as a kid was because I was cheating and modding it and just playing it as a sandbox.

The actual game and world is extremely boring indeed, Skyrim was a lot better IMO

Morrowind I've never really got a chance of actually playing, I had it but was way too difficult for me as a 10 year old to play, although it always had that enchanting quality to it, now that I'm older, the idea of an elder scrolls game without fast travel and map markers seems amazing

Mind telling us what mods you recommend?

@Leo Gura Your Russian heritage might just be showing. East-Europeans love their janky RPGS.

Don't believe Morrowind runs on that lil thinkpad though

Enjoying the aesthetics of a game is pretty huge actually. It's why developers put so much time and resources into how a game looks.

Morrowind has some great ideas that give it a lot of depth which I wish more modern games would learn from, such as description instead of simple quest markers, but the moment to moment gameplay is just not very good in my opinion. The depth is really all that the game has going for it whereas Fortnite feels good the fifteen or so minutes that you play it.

Depth design-wise can be a bit of a catch-22 since over a certain point it can make the moment to moment gameplay more clunky and less fun. For example, in Squad in order to build a base so your teammates can respawn, you need at least one other player and a squad leader + resources in order to build a base whereas in Hell Let Loose, a similar hardcore shooting game, you just need a squad leader and resources to build a spawn point. The former has more tactical depth and gravitas but the latter is much more seamless and less dependent on cooperation. Hardcore shooters are a different genre but it does illustrate that dichotomy between depth and playability. Walking slowly everywhere in Morrowind, taking the giant bug buss instead of fast-traveling does make the game feel more immersive and is satisfying as you unlock different ways of traveling like using magic (depth) but does objectively drag when you don't have those options and isn't necessarily more satisfying to play overall than if you have the option to fast-travel.

Morrowind travel is good. It is integral to the world. The mark/recall spells are super important as a limited fast travel system, which takes some skill.

You can also probably find some mods that give more travel options to speed it up a bit.

There is a mod that lets you walk faster by default.

There are so many I can't list them all.

Search for videos on YT for top must-have mods.

I went ahead and installed the Total Overhaul mod list from here: https://modding-openmw.com/guides/auto/. It automatically configures the installation for you.

This is what the list looks like:

Go to NexusMods and search for most popular and most downloaded Morrowind mods:

https://www.nexusmods.com/games/morrowind?modSort=popular

Don't install too many at once. Install a bit and test that they work properly. Over time you can build up a huge list.

Looks pretty good. Technically still the same game and I don't know if I'd care too much about going back, becoming the arena champion, closing the demon gates and all that, I've lived that story once and it was enough. Elder Scrolls needs a step up from being this dungeon crawler / city crawler game. I don't know what the next thing would be but it is an overused pattern at this stage.

If one day Morowind and Kingdom Come 2 could have a love child, that would be the game that changes a history.

That's will never happen. Todd only knows this formula and it makes them too much $$$.
