Israelis Abroad

19 posts in this topic

I read a story online posted about how Israelis are taking over Thailand and treating the country with no respect. I have also seen them do this in Mexico, Brazil and Panama. They are the worst people to see traveling, they are loud, entitled, nasty, rude, and only move around in their little clicks, ignoring and isolating themselves from all other cultures with little to no respect or interest in them. It’s actually astounding and I can’t even imagine how horribly they are treating those kind and sweet Thai people. Story below:

“As Israeli visitor numbers to Thailand surge to record highs—over 103,000 in just the first three months of 2025—so too have complaints about their behaviour. Thai authorities, increasingly exasperated by reports of violence, disrespect for local customs, and disruptive conduct, are now urging Israeli nationals to show greater cultural sensitivity.

In a bid to rein in the trouble, a WhatsApp chatbot powered by AI and launched in partnership with the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok now dispenses etiquette reminders to Israeli tourists—advising them to speak quietly, dress modestly, wear helmets, and show respect toward Buddhism and the Thai monarchy.

Authorities have also introduced a mandatory digital arrival card for all foreign visitors, enabling closer monitoring of tourist entries. The move reflects growing concerns among Thai officials and locals alike, who say they’ve had enough of unruly behaviour from a tourist group that’s rapidly wearing out its welcome.”

What do you guys think of this?

Israelis are divided into two main groups of Jews who came from Arab countries, and Jews who came from western mostly European countries. Therefore, they express two main cultures in their behaviour and mentality.

Israel is a very young and deeply fragmented society shaped by massive waves of immigration of Jews from other vastly different cultures from America, Russia, Ethiopia and many more countries.

When you understand that Israel is meant to be a melting pot for Jews all over the world it just make sense that it will necessarily be one of the most diverse nations on the planet.

I heard something similar about the Jim Crow south. You can see examples white people during that time being arrogant and rude. But today southerners are considered more polite and hospitable.

In a society with a hierarchy, the mind splits into categories that are active at different times. In South Africa whites believed they were superior and the majority wanted to maintain apartheid, but now that it ended most say they were against it, because when it was available the part that thinks they are superior is active, but when it ends the part that thinks they aren’t comes out.

Israelis are raised in a racial hierarchy and think they are racially superior to others, especially Arabs. When people are in a position to exploit others their subconscious mind convinces them to demonize the other group and believe they are superior to maintain the exploitation. But the other half of the Israelis consciousness telling them otherwise will come out as soon as it’s clear maintaining the hierarchy is unsustainable.

@Nivsch

“Judaism is not and cannot be a nationality in any sound political sense, as every political scientist knows. Although the Jews are not a racial element in any sense, but rather a living ‘museum’ of all the world’s racial mixtures, as every anthropologist realizes, their imposition of themselves as a so-called, pretending nation in an artificial, carved-out state makes them and Zionism essentially a racist movement.”

Hm. That’s interesting, and I’m sure there are all types of people there.

It still doesn’t really explain the poor behavior abroad. Many countries are melting pots and don’t behave so consistently like this when traveling.

They also are only offering 30 day visas instead of 60. But I just asked my Thai friend and he said it's because of illegal workers and didn't mention Israelis. Everyone knows the Israelis mostly hang around in Pai and they definitely form their own exclusive cliques but idk about all the other stuff

In my experience, the rudest and most abrasive people I've met where Israeli when I visited the country. Some of the worst customer experiences I've ever had.

I once ordered a veggie burrito or whatever it was called but there was chicken in it so I told them they got my order wrong so the lady at the counter without even looking at me snatches the thing out of my hands and plucks out the chicken bits so it's just a salad roll. Another time I qued up to buy some ice cream and when I reached the till I looked down at fridge to pick one out. When I looked back up the lady at the counter was staring at me like I've shat in her cereal. Just gawking at me fiendishly (👺). There where plenty of other experiences where I felt like a stranger with people yelling or staring aggressively or cutting in line. This was all in a trip that lasted 10 days.

Edit: I swear I didn't pick the tengu emoji because it has a big nose by the way...

Within the diving/tourism industry the two groups with the biggest reputation are the Chinese and Israelis. While Chinese can be loud and don't follow instructions, lsraelis can act entitled, they think everything is for sale, they feel insulted if you say no to a request, they expect that you break the rules specifically for them. The interesting thing is you can see this behaviour also in their international politics.

I know that some dive shops try to avoid mixing Chinese / Israeli with Western people, just to avoid negative customer experience to Western customers.

A local girlfriend of mine runs a vegan / vegetarian restaurant. Veganism is quite big in Israel, so naturally she attracts a lot of Israelis. We spoke about this behaviour before, she also noticed it. She said the way to handle it is to be strict and firm form the get go.

That said, I met plenty of nice Israeli and Chinese people as well, but some behaviour is noticeable from people from certain counties. Americans can be obnoxiously intrusive, arrogant and oblivious to a world outside their country. English and Aussies can be stupid drunk, etc etc. Even the Dutch can have a reputation, there is even a term for it, Dutch Directness 😄.

Be careful with stereotypes but they also exist for a reason.

Yes true, luckily for me I don't encounter too many (bad) Russians on the island here.

Chinese, Israelis, British, Russians and Americans are all in the top five worst tourists in the world. I don't know who eeks out the top but the competition is fierce.

Yeah they are annoying. Saw a bunch of them backpacking Brasil, they were worse than the Americans.

Israelis are like that because when they finish their long military service, they usually take a sabbatical year to travel. So they're a group of 20-year-olds, recently enlisted in the military, who are always drinking and partying. I saw a lot of them in Argentina, and in Brazil. They're pretty idiotic, but I'd say it's because of that circumstance.

Brits can also be quite nice and friendly.

« British politeness »

Was in Egypt last week and an Egyptian told me Brits are in his top 3 tourists.

But he doesn’t like Russians and East Europeans etc.

Americans are often also quite friendly. I met many nice ones travelling in Europe. They are often loud though and can be annoying etc.  They also do dumb stuff. I was in Colombia a while ago. And often the toursist getting robbed and scammed on tinder were Americans there. Or the dumb stuff those Anerican tiktokers and YouTubers did in Japan etc.

But for example Russians are just different culturally. I met a few nice ones but they’re much less friendly usually often treat staff much worse etc.

I guess it depends where you go.

In Spain Germans and Brits can be some of the worst tourists.

While in Mexico Cancun etc and Colombia Americans are bad.

In Latin America and Thailand i guess Israelis not good.

While in many places Chinese and Russians aren’t well liked as tourists generally.

A friend of me worked in a hotel in the alps and told me Indians were some of the worst.
