Does this Buddhist advice work long term?

8 posts in this topic

I joined a discord group of Buddhists to see their perspective on what makes a good life and satisfaction. If I ask about wanting anything such as wanting an increased baseline consciousness or to plan out a fulfilling life, I get the same sort of answer.

The answer I receive is something like: Practice cultivating the feeling of fulfillment in each moment. Eventually those concepts of purpose and long term goals will appear as unnecessary clutter.

I am not sure if this philosophy is common for Buddhists or it is just this group but it seems like they are taking this lesson a bit too far. I see how it can be beneficial to reframe things to remove discomfort and be happy now but doing this as a one size fits all answer to everything seems a bit much. It appears they are desiring not to desire anything difficult so they will be comfortable and happy all the time. I don't see this working very well long term although there are many ways people live that are much worse.

Does anyone have any opinion on this?

The practice of meditation can give you life long fruits. It's a very universal advice that fits all.

Imagine for a moment, dear friends, that you are Conciousness, and that you have only this one awareness - that you are at peace, and that you are.

Ego quelling is only step one. This means now is nice. Now you need step 2. Now that fake you is dead, bring real you to the party.

It’s one of many paths. It’s one of many solutions to a problem. It might fit you where you are in your particular path or not, depends on you. So there’s not a clear answer. But something to keep in mind is that sometimes the idea of development of consciousness can be just that, an idea that someone has that isn’t very tangible or grounded in direct experience

Thanks for everyone’s replies. After sleeping on it I can see how the advice makes some sense from a certain point of view and strategy for living a good life.

It may be suited for someone with a certain set of values and survival strategy. It seems a certain amount of having survival figured out, wisdom, life experience and consciousness is needed to introspect and understand when this sort of advice works.

I plan to enjoy live as a human figuring stuff out for himself for a while longer even though I am aware there is no self here and it is possible to be content without understanding how anything works.

Buddhism is vast there’s a huge amount of different beliefs in different religious sects. I volunteered at  a NKT center and I would say it is very good. But I wouldn’t just do that alone like from that and try to do other stuff as well.

they also believe the Earth is flat so take that in mind when you follow their teachings.

Anyone who says they’re enlightened on this form in anyway is not, except me I am.

Bhuddism is for the long term (lifetimes), as their beliefs state.
