The Pinocchio paradox: Solution

8 posts in this topic

So this is the illusion of a paradox, it's not actually a paradox.

Part 1) If Pinocchio says "My nose is about to grow" -> if he is lying -> then it will grow => Making the statement true but he still lied.

The statement becoming true in the future does not mean he didn't lie.

HE STILL LIED... So there is no paradox.

Part 2) If Pinocchio says "My nose is about to grow" -> if he is mistaken -> then it will not grow.

Lying is an intentional Act. If he makes an incorrect statement it will not grow, ignorance does not cause his nose to grow. It is the intentional Act of deception that causes it to grow.

How is this post just me acting out my ego in the usual ways? Is this post just me venting and justifying my selfishness? Are the things you are posting in alignment with principles of higher consciousness and higher stages of ego development? Are you acting in a mature or immature way? Are you being selfish or selfless in your communication? Are you acting like a monkey or like a God-like being?

Somehow Neil deGrasse Tyson has such a poor understanding of psychology he doesn't know what lying is. 🤷‍♀️

Most people are so blind they don't know that this is not a paradox.

---

If I lie about something but then it happens to become true in the future by accident, I still lied...

So because he lied the nose grew making perfect sense.

The cognitive fallacy is that they think because it became true then he wasn't lying. Do you see how foolish that is?

Can "lying" be unconscious?

It seems that ignorance may lie behind certain forms of "lying." But I'm holding lying as having a broader meaning than the norm, as in operating from untrue things. This would be a deeper investigation.

For example, we tend to take our beliefs to be true. We do. Yet they are beliefs--the truth is unknown. We might assume that we are X or Y, and, while not false, it is untrue, which might be called unconsciousness, or in a sense, "lying." I might be taking creative liberties with the word, though. ;)

lies:

an intentionally false statement.

There are too many additions to this statement to make it work you can add infinite other things to it like he is mistaken or say something after to completely change the thought experiment but for this one you need to be completely bare minimum with what is happening and take all other words out

pinnochio knows that if he makes a false statement his nose will grow

he makes the statement my nose is about to grow

he dosent know that makes it an intentionally false statement a lie

his nose grows

Since it grows we can say he wasnt lying

But he was lying cause the first statement was not true he didnt know.

If I stand by a street and say a red car is about to turn without knowing and one turns that was a lie that no one can know but me. Trying to predict reality is a lie imo if you dont know. A non lie would be pinnochio saying I don't know if my nose is going to grow unless it is.

@Hojo @UnbornTao I think you guys are on to something.

It looks like the mistake everyone is making is they think "Pinocchio's nose will grow if he says something false", "Pinocchio's nose will grow if hes wrong".

They misunderstand lying as saying something that's true or false.

People say things that are wrong all the time without knowing, and none of them are lying.

Pinocchio's paradox IS NOT The Liar's paradox.
