Trying to understand Elon Musks shift in personality or "radicalization".

A picture of him knowingly holding and demonstrating a fake solar roof shingle on the set of Desperate Housewives, claiming it’s real and functional. Shareholders believed him and invested billions in it back in 2016 over it. He’s just been selling his “green” junk and coming across as a savior of humanity for it. All one big show.

The impression he gives is of a very neurotic addict who functions from the lack. All he does is fill his emptiness, he needs tons of things to feed himself, and power is a very tasty food. I would say that deep down he is completely dishonest, but the fact of being dishonest seems wrong to him, so he pretends to be honest and act for the good of humanity even to himself, when his only motivation is to suck egoic energy. 

We have to admit that the guy is efficient and gets what he wants. I would say that in his mind the ideal would be to go down in history as someone who has made a difference, a main character, a genius. This has the advantage that he will try with all his energy to bring about a positive change in the world, but his vision of "positive" can be quite strange.

@ricachica Yes, he fakes his demos. But that doesn't mean he doesn't deliver.

The reason he fakes his demos is because when you have a large vision for something new, you don't have anything to show people. But you need their money to build it. This is not so perplexing or shocking. Innovative business requires making bold promises using mockups and flimsy demos.

The more important question is whether he delivers on the promises in the end. He often does.

Musk is a bullshit artist but also good at delivering the goods. Trump is purely a bullshit artist.

@Leo Gura Okay, let’s assume we give him the benefit of the doubt. It’s clear though that he consistently shows lotttss of optimism about product timelines and has made several inaccurate statements about future capabilities. Given his track record it’s becoming increasingly difficult to give him the benefit of the doubt. It’s true that his companies are capable of innovative products, from Hyperloop and Neuralink, though it all seems to come with a rather heavy dose of Musk’s overblown rhetoric. Those examples are well known ones.

Another less known and forgotten about project….Tesla Ventilators.

 

Then the donation of 40 ventilators to hospitals…except they were not ventilators at all. But hey, he got to finally be called a hero that completes his promises by that Phil Lebeau guy at least. Musk is just really good at PR prominently, everything else secondary or not at all. He was outright lying about donating ventilators here, that’s a bit different than just trying to sell your product in a favorable light.

This is just the next phase of his master plan to rule the world, which he’s always wanted. In order for him to do that, he’ll need many people to think he cares about humanity.

The ability to empathize and to be compassionate does not make you a good person if you don’t act on what those make you feel or what they show you. If you have compassion and then act against it in favor of your own gain, you are not a person of virtue. You’re just an ordinary person. Clinging to the idea that Elon has or had extraordinary virtue is just cope from years of thinking he was a hero, which was put into the minds of millions via his marketing manipulations. It happens.

The thing is, even this is subordinate to his desire to harvest money from society. I do think he is, on some level, sincere in wanting to expand space exploration, but not if it comes at the cost of his own power/wealth. As it stands, the Artemis Program and SLS/Orion rockets being developed by NASA are our best bet at becoming an interplanetary species in the next few decades, but because they are run by public servants and not “enlightened corporate techbros” (lol) he absolutely can’t stand that thought and is trying to destroy it as a result. He’s unironically the greatest threat to space travel since, well, I’m not even sure lol.

Greed is one hell of a drug.

The issue is that his ideas of what is good for mankind are very different from yours. And you should not be so sure that your ideas are the correct ones.

Good is relative.

It is not at all clear what is good for mankind. That's the issue.

Musk sometimes delivers and sometimes fails. But when he fails, it’s because he never had proof of concept to begin with. He just assumed his idea must be possible because he thought of it and it seemed plausible to him. Three instances of failure I can think of that are examples of that are Hyperloop, The Tesla Semi Truck and the initial vision for the Boring Company underground tunnels. He often lacks the foresight to see the enormous technical and engineering challenges he’ll have to overcome to execute his vision. And sometimes he gets so caught up in his vision that he fails to see another comparable technology that already exists as a viable solution to the same problem. Or worse, he KNOWS there is an alternate solution that actually works and actively tries to discredit it. Like when he shut down the California high-speed rail project so he could build Hyperloop.

He does succeed sometimes. And when he does it is often off the back of existing technologies that are underappreciated in the market. That is where his business genius lies in my opinion. He saw the value in electric vehicles, so he invested in Tesla. He saw the value in satellite internet and developed Starlink. Those products already had proof of concept, so they weren’t as risky. It was simply a matter of building out the infrastructure and marketing it in a way that showed its value and appealed to everyday people. He does appear to have a good understanding of what emerging technologies to invest in. It’s when he tries to come up with something from scratch that he gets led astray by his own hubris and lack of technical understanding.

Everyone is analysing from afar, no one here, only a few ppl in all of existence know what it is like to be in Musk's shoes, with that much money, power, influence, resources, networking and such, but we look at him with our own bias and knowing, we cannot see clearly in these matters, you have one person saying his actions are incorrect, against society all for himself, and another person saying the exact opposite, so who too listen too?

Don't listen to anyone, don't be too concerned about these types, Trump included, nothing You say or do will make any difference in the end, don't conclude, You don't know what it is like, You can't because You are not in his situation, You don't have all the information (even if You did its biased), and cannot determine what is absolutely right or wrong, all ppl when it come to actions make mistake and are misinterpreted...

Just live Your Life, realize what Life is and live it to its fullest Potential..all of this is done within You, does not need external perfection to know...

No doubt being in Musk's shoes isn't easy. But he is so clearly wrong and out of his depth in the area of politics. It's cringe.

There is no issue with him doing his businesses. The criticism is all about his corruption of politics. Just because he is rich goes not give his any right to corrupt our government so shamelessly and recklessly, like a petulant child.
