I’m the same. I rather just eat less in quantity to lose weight than eat only low calorie food. For example I really like Olive oil, Parmesan cheese etc

Yep; Spot on.

Yes, Cronometer also count micronutrients.

I might wanna try that sometime. I guess for now when I’m trying to loose weight I’ll just eat smaller portions without needing to count, but then when I reach goal weight I might count to know how much I’m gonna eat to maintain

@SugarcoatI don't think taking pictures and letting AI guess the calories is an accurate way of measuring. I would just use chatGPT text function to calculate calories. Just tell it what you ate and approx how much. It works well.

That’s smart I have never thought or heard of that. That would kinda be like using my fitness pal right, you’d have to weigh the food or tell them the quantity in another way like for example 2 eggs or 50 grams cheese

That would be much more accurate and it is free. If you have a small kitchen scale that would be ideal.

I have one. Yea I’m considering it once I find it useful to know more exactly the calories.

That’s true. Weighing the food/counting the quantities and logging it is the ideal way of counting calories. I did do that a short while but then stopped because it was so much work kinda. But I might utilize it again

@Sugarcoat try taking photos of everything you eat for a week. Maybe you're underestimating how much work that is.

There's a smart way to go about tracking food: use/create categories. I'll show you with an example:

PLAN: Lunch: 150g pasta, 250g lean meat, 30g snacks, 20g nuts

The categories are "Pasta", "Lean Meat", "Snacks", "Nuts".

  • Pasta: I can eat pasta with pesto, tomato sauce, or even rice, and many other possibilities. As long as the dressing isn't super fatty, I know I just have to eat 150g and I'm good, no need to log anything!
  • Meat: 250g of lean meat is about 350g of lean fish, or 180g of bresaola, in terms of calories and macronutrients. So I can pick any of those 3 options (if the calories and macros are similar you can add other options), and again, just follow the quantities, without needing to log.
  • Snacks: snacks like chocolate, chips, even cookies. They're all very similar in macros and calories.
  • Nuts: Walnuts, almonds, cashews, all similar in macros and calories.

Summary, I plan my new diet (once every 1-2 months), in categories, and then I just have to weigh my food to follow my plan, without ever tracking anything, and I know my daily macros are perfect.

PS - This is how dietitians create your diets anyway...

Thanks that is smart yea. You have to be smart in how you create those categories

Cal might work for very simple recipes where the ingredients are easily distinguishable and the model can roughly estimate portion sizes in scale to one another. Imagine something like a steak with roasted potatoes. It would average out the usual steak values and the same for potatoes.

Now give it something like a fancy one pot dish made out of 15 ingredients and it'll have no idea without you prompting it further, which could work if you don't mind doing that. It'll also under or overstimate oils, sodium, water etc.

I still find good old cronometer.com to work almost the best, even at a free plan the app is incredible. And if you tend to eat, say, the same 10 meals over around, you can create those and then have it calculate proportionally. So like if you have your favourite chillic-con-carne, you'll feed him all ingredients and then with each portion you'll literally do -> My Recipes -> Chilli-Con-Carne - 15% portion (of total).

That is what I was thinking too. Because for example I like to eat salads where all the ingredients are mixed and I find it hard to believe it would be able to distinguish properly what it contains.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try when I feel the need to count calories.

I don't understand the idea of watching calories; it seems like such a meaningless way of life...

Just OCD.

I just don't smoke (actually sometime buy a pack lol, but's it's rare)

What’s the reason when you do buy cigarettes? Is it the taste, the feeling what is it? I’ve been craving vaping sometimes it’s satisfying to blow and it’s a nice little feeling

Hi.

The taste is ok depending on the brand, I like the international Dunhill red even if they are a bit strong.
But it's mainly for the effects yes; It both puts me in a bit of a cool vibe, a bit "yo yo" lol, and makes me proactive/calms the rumination.

Coffee stimulates me but it's a bit of a robotic, even antagonistic vibe.

I must smoke two packs a year, like at Christmas and my birthday; It's ok.

I have an electronic cigarette but I never use it, it's annoying to clean and I don't like turning myself into a human steam machine.
I'm also wary of vapor products and for the taste.

Doesn't want to smoke petroleum derivatives from the asshole of China modified to taste like "cookies and cream" lol.

There is sometimes value in it. You wouldn't usually expect someone to track nonstop. It is usually a short term awareness activity through which you can:

  • show consistent nutritional inadequacies (not getting enough zinc, calcium, iron protein etc)  and then using these apps you can prepare a nutrition plan that enhances that by choosing, for example, iron rich foods etc.
  • assess portion sizes and portion control for people who need that (anorexia, diabetes, obesity, elderly people, children, people prepping for competitions, athletes
  • understand a potential cause of health problems - like if someone complains about chronic fatigue and then you find out that they eat 500 calories below what they need - you can show it to them.
  • help someone who is transitioning their diet (e.g. going to vegan, keto) make sure their new diet isn't suboptimal

Also lot of people drastically under or overestimate how much they eat. So there is tons of practical value but I agree that long term for a healthy person it adds more unecessary complexity to life.

I find it is a nice self calibration to do it every now and then.

Hi

Ok I can understand if it has pleasant effects. That’s why most people do it I guess

Those two packs hopefully do negligible damage

Now you making me wanna try just out of curiosity. I’ve tried maybe twice but I don’t remember how it felt if I even felt anything.
