2025 German Federal Elections 🇩🇪

27 posts in this topic

On the twenty-third of February, The Federal Republic of Germany is going to hold parliamentary elections which will decide its new Chancellor.

Watch this video below for full context on who is running and what do they want.

There is a big concern in German politics that the far-right party, the AfD, is surging in the polls, and is now estimated to be the second most popular party in Germany. The AfD is best known for its anti-asylum policies and strict closed borders, which is growing more popular as more German women are reporting harassment by migrants and not feeling safe going outside. They support mass deportations, and even [allegedly] support remigration, which is the removal of those of foreign origin back to their ethnic homeland, regardless of citizenship status.

The anti-capitalist, Democratic Socialist party, Die Linke, is polling at its all time low, at 5%. Keep in mind, for a party to have seats in the legislator, it needs a minimum of 5% of the votes. Die Linke is different from the Social Democrats, the SPD. SPD is socially democratic and wants to keep the capitalist system, whereas Die Linke wants to do away with the capitalist system all together. But there is hope for them, because there is a populist backlash against the SPD, but that populist rage is directed more towards [in favor of] the AfD.

The decline of Die Linke was largely due to their odd pro-Russia stance, which made them unpopular during this time of war. Russia is another huge point of argument. Whether or not to keep importing oil from Russia, to continue to support Ukriane, to allow Ukraine into NATO, is being hotly debated.

No it’s because Afd is anti EU.

And the EU is tougher on american tech companies.

If the EU is gone then the US will have less competition.

Nobody cares about leaving the European Union, people vote more to the right for security and that's it.

How ?

Not being in the European Union does not prevent international cooperation, possibly inter-European.

And vice versa, Germany led by the pro-European left stabbed France in the back with Mercosur.

What’s interesting is among young people the popular parties are the far left and far right. This indicates a lot of polarization in the future.

Maybe there's hope for Die Linke, fingers crossed. https://www.dw.com/en/germany-left-party-2025-elections/a-71338903

I would love if more German users could give their perspectives.

What's the situation of the ground in the Fatherland. Why is the AfD so so popular, and with whom? Who are you going to vote for, and why?

I’m not a German.

But i think it’s clearly popular because of immigration and refugees mostly from the middle east, Turkey and North Africa. (basically Muslim countries)

Also anti woke stuff.

So it looks like the conservative Union party will win big while the AFD will rapidly increase to second place.

The problem is the majority party has refused to work with AFD so it will face pressure to work with them to get things done.

Another interesting thing is among young people the most popular parties are far left and far right, indicating a lot of polarization in the future.

Germany on its own has no shot at competing with the US, China or India, their country is too small and their population is minuscule. On their own they are resource poor, mineral poor, and oil poor. This isn’t 1945 anymore where the population of Germany was closer to the US’s population.

If you listen to Alice Weidel, you’ll notice she talks about Angela merkel the same way Trump talks about Biden. She basically blames her for all the modern issues Germany faces today.

French farmers are heavily subsidized by the EU, the largest contributor to that budget is Germany.

A “Dexit” would be a disaster for Germany, Whatever damage the EU inflicts on It’s countries pales in comparison to the damage you would cause by leaving it.

AfD has some good ideas imo but what’s the point if they’re just going to ruin it with dexit. It’s just a slower economy for everyone.

The AfD is acting like there will be no economic consequences to anti-immigration and Germans will just magically start reproducing and filling out all the jobs. Germany received so many immigrants precisely because they needed them more than others.

Look at Germany’s population graphs, they’ve barely grown by 10 million people in the last  60 years. The US has grown by 160 million people in that same time period, every country has grown substantially more than Germany. China has grown by 744 million people in 60 years.

Here is my assessment of the parties spiral dynamics stages:

AfD: Pure Blueand maybe with a bit of Red

CDU: a mix of mostly Blue and Orange

FDP: Pure Orange

Greens: Green (duh), and maybe with a bit of Yellow

Linke: Pure Green

BSW: Green and Orange (i think???)

SPD: Yellow and Green

I will most probably vote for SPD since i see the most yellow in them, but this is just my assessment based on how i understand Spiral dynamics.

you can let me know if anyone disagrees with me on this

No France gives almost 5 billion more than it receives from the European Union and that number has actually declined significantly this decade ; We would have more money by leaving the European Union and we would not be subject to a transatlantic treaty which benefits Germany.

The civilizational question goes beyond the economic question.

I think turning on nuclear and focusing more on energy is a better approach (AfD’s proposals). Europe focuses on being “green” and climate friendly while we pay astronomical prices for gas and energy.

We Europeans are totally ignorant on energy prices, we might think that paying 1.60 or 2 euros per liter of Diesel or petrol is the norm everywhere in the world. We are the exception, we are more expensive than everyone else.

Even if that is true and France did contribute 5 billion euros more (Germany is still the largest contributor) the food grown on German, Spanish and Polish soil ends up on your French shelves in Franprix at no additional cost because the EU countries don't impose tariffs on each other. So you're welcome.

Which transatlantic treaty?

Because of a slower economy quite literally, AfD says the EU is too bureaucratic, you know what's really bureaucratic? thousands of trucks lined up on a German-France border because now they need customs inspection and paperwork to pass through your country. You don't border a single non-EU member state so you don't know how bad it gets, and neither does AfD.
