Trump slaps insane 25% tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China

43 posts in this topic

What’s sad is all the businesses that are going to get wrecked by this. Not only that, the American consumers will just have to pay more for goods. These are our allies and neighbors and Trump is treating them like enemies. It’s extremely unwise. Tariffs are basically just adding on invisible price tags to people trying to do business. And all this to “enrich the American people” - that’s his reason! There’s no shame or even hiding it anymore.

It's what the American people wanted, clearly.

No, most people didn’t vote for trump, they didn’t vote or voted for Kamala.

Our ex chancellor in Germany Angela Merkel said that Trump is somebody who doesnt believe in win win situations, for him there is always a winner and a looser. Coming from that philosophy his decision on the tariffs seem reasonable. But countries already seemed prepared for this and are doing counter tariffs and looking for other trading partners. So this looks like it ends up being a loose loose situation. No holistic thinking capabilities from trump.

The Idea of making North America one Economic Unit, as a Canadian, I don't mind this idea, our currency turns into US dollars, we have no tariffs or customs taxes to pay when going back and forth, we are free to work or live in either country, trade is free, that sort of thing is appealing to me, but it doesn't have to go as far as Us becoming a state of the US, more like what they do in EU with the Euro and no Travel Restrictions...

What is happening now will hurt all the countries involved, no doubts, mostly Americans I think...

Its 25% on Mexico, 25% on Canada and 10% on China

10% on already existing China tariffs.

So there are more than 25% on China i think.

Mexico tarrifs have been paused for one month apparently after Trump spoke with Mexican President who agreed to send soldiers to the border.

Trump and the Republicans were probably panicking that’s why they stopped it.

A typical example of Trump making a grand promise, but then doing something that's the opposite of that.

According to top independent economists if Trump really implements his entire tariff plan, then the average American will have to spend about $2600 more from their pocketbook and/or from their business revenue.

Also, this move ironically contradicts the decades-long Republican principle of promoting the free market. Tariffs are a form of government intervention that can disrupt private enterprise. This approach is the opposite of Reaganism, which emphasized free trade.

Trump is trying to implement an outdated idea used by conservative Republicans like Coolidge in the 1920s and McKinley before that. Their tariff policies had severe negative consequences, particularly with the Smoot-Hawley tariff, which worsened the Great Depression.

100%.  The stock market is tanking and the economy was soon to follow.  Trump & Co panicked because I doubt they expected that.

Mexico’s President stood her ground and even did a retaliatory tariff back on the USA along with Canada.

Those 10,000 soldiers were already agreed upon with Biden anyways, so that was all for nothing with Trump’s stupid ass posturing.  Lmao.

Back when America did make stuff. Was it the highest quality in the world?

Right now I think it's European items that are the most well made, long lasting, best design, etc

But I am not sure exactly. Anyone know?

As other nations get rich off of America, America should get something in return.  Other countries do tariffs such as Japan.  The government there makes it much more expensive for local people to buy foreign cars compared to Japanese cars.
