Fear of getting shouted at in social Settings - how to overcome it?

(if this better fits into another category, like Mental Health - feel free to move it, or make me aware of it. I wasn't quite sure where to put this.)

Hello everyone,

i will keep myself short and spare you the details.

I am currently stuck with doing Outreach to potential Clients by phone for building my business - mainly because of fear.

I am currently trying different books and other resources to try to overcome this, but my awareness around Shadow Work, Inner Child Work etc. lead me to investigate this a bit deeper, and I believe it stems from some form of childhood trauma.

I was bullied in primary and middle school and was always an Outsider. I tried to be the class clown all the time to get some attention and social status that way, but it often made it even worse. I was also often verbally abused by my dad, and frequently shouted at.

I believe this is where the fear from cold calls stems from - because whenever I have to do the calls (which I currently avoid like the plague, which greatly hurts my business and my self confidence), I envision two specific horror scenarios:

  • I get severly shouted at
  • I get legal complaints that I did something wrong and that I might be in legal trouble (cold calling in my home country can be a bit tricky)

These exact fears are also present in other social scenarios - dating, for example. My mind always jumps to extreme scenarios where people get verbally abusive towards me.

I can rationally think of hundreds of reasons why this shouldn't bother me, and especially not prevent me from doing the calls.
Doesn't help the traumatized, emotional side of me, though.

Are there any things I can try that wouldn't take too long to get some rather quick effects and make me able to do the calls? "Just doing them" is the usual advice, but I feel stuck and extremely apathetic when even thinking about doing them...

After the immediate effects - what should I look into longterm to get this sorted out for good? I have looked into regular therapy, CBT and Hypnotherapie, aswell as Shadow Work. Any specific things I should try out, maybe something I'm not aware of yet?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

If it's going to get you in legal trouble, maybe it's safer not to do it.

This work doesn't seem like the right fit for you given your psychological constitution and constraints.

You might have to look for other jobs and gradually build your contacts.

Also cold calling seems outdated.

ChatGPT Rules for Cold Calling in Turkey

In Turkey, the practice of cold calling—initiating unsolicited calls for marketing purposes—is regulated under the Law on the Regulation of Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce Law) No. 6563 and the Regulation on Commercial Communication and Electronic Commercial Messages. These regulations mandate that businesses obtain prior consent from individuals before sending electronic commercial communications, including phone calls, unless specific exceptions apply.

Key Points:

    •    Prior Consent (Opt-In Requirement): Businesses must secure explicit consent from recipients before making unsolicited marketing calls. This consent can be obtained in writing or through electronic communication channels. Messages seeking consent should not contain promotional content, and consent forms must ensure that the affirmative declaration is not pre-selected. Additionally, obtaining consent should not be a prerequisite for purchasing goods or services.

    •    Exceptions: Prior consent is not required in the following situations:

    •    The recipient has voluntarily provided their contact details, and the message pertains to the use, maintenance, or changes related to goods or services already acquired.

    •    The communication is about debt collection, payment reminders, information updates, purchases, deliveries, or similar actions concerning an ongoing subscription, membership, or partnership, provided it does not promote other goods or services.

    •    The recipient is a merchant or craftsman.

    •    The message serves as information sent to customers by a company conducting intermediary activities regulated by capital market legislation.

    •    Opt-Out Mechanism: Recipients have the right to refuse further communications at any time without providing a reason. Service providers are obligated to inform recipients of this right and must include easy and free means for opting out in every commercial message. Upon receiving an opt-out request, the service provider must cease sending messages to the recipient within three business days.

    •    Content Requirements: The content of the communication must align with the consent obtained. Each message should include at least one of the following contact details of the service provider: phone number, fax number, SMS number, or email address. If not evident from the content, the message must clearly indicate its promotional or commercial nature. For voice calls, this disclosure should be made at the beginning of the conversation.

    •    Penalties for Non-Compliance: Violations of these regulations can result in administrative fines imposed by the Ministry of Trade or its related directorate. Fines vary depending on the nature of the violation and can range from TRY 1,000 to TRY 15,000 for individual offenses. If unsolicited messages are sent to multiple recipients without consent, fines can be up to ten times higher.

It’s essential for businesses engaging in cold calling in Turkey to adhere strictly to these regulations to ensure compliance and avoid potential penalties.

In reality someone yelling at you doesn’t mean a lot. Try using Qigong and have someone you can rely on to regulate.

@Raze You can do what you want. If you don't think that was a solid output explaining the rules of cold calling in Turkey... That's on you. Show me a better one.

Note: You don't know my prompt.

Not all prompts need to be complex. Sometimes a simple query like: What are the rules for cold calling in Turkey?... is broad enough for a list of the rules. You can then go deeper after a starting off point..

I can take a look at Deepseek.

It's not particularly that it get's me immediately into legal trouble, it's just that Europe has some very strict laws about data protection, and it can be tricky to do everything right.

That goes for every method of reaching out to potential clients, though. So other alternatives aren't particularly safer.

There are guidelines to follow and it isn't illegal, but my anxious mind sees it as an easy sultion to scare me out of doing it, i guess.

I am not sure if this is a sign that it isn't the right fit for me - or exactly the right fit. I have observed in others and my own life that the thing that is most scary and uncomfortable in the beginning is the thing that ends up bringing me along the most, and feeling the most fulfilling. It is just a hurdle to overcome, whiel I work on my psychological constitution in the meantime.

It isn't direct "hey, wanna buy?"-type of cold calling, rather a part of a longer process with value given upfront.

Cool. I would suggest you try to get a hang of it and maybe over time you will overcome this challenge.

Best.

@Thought Art

I am aware of ChatGPT and other LLMs and use them a lot, so I already used it and other resoruces to try and fix some of my legal worries and anxiety.

Besides that, I am in Germany, not Turkey.

Is it setup wrong in my profile? Because for me it shows Germany.

Thanks for your reply though!

@Buck Edwards
Thank you very much!

Yeah, I guess I'm just looking for something that makes the first few dozen calls a bit easier, reduce the resistance... after that I could get it rolling for sure...

Best to you too.
