How to make consuming politics enjoyable?

13 posts in this topic

I really want to consume more political news, it's important for my life, but I just find it so damn uninteresting.

I enjoy reading politics from Leos blog though as this is embedded in spiritual understanding. That makes sense to me. But without that most of the political sources I consume just seems like shadows fighting each other. My political understand isnt good enough to easily and accurately make sense of political discussions so I cant really connect it to the existential roots and then it becomes uninteresting. Does politics become more interesting when you understand more of it?

I dont want to consume cheap dopamin political stories either of course. I have a news source I could listen to every day for 5mins to get some basic understanding but I rarely find the motivation to do it. Thats an interesting perspective: when you are happy in life I guess it becomes easier for you to consume high quality political news because you have enough feel good emotions in your system to endure listening to dry and nuanced political news without the need of dopamine hits to keep you aware. So there seems to be a real necessity and many life purposes to package nuanced and mature politics into something entertaining to listen to. I haven't found that connection been made all that often though.

What I want to know as I am sure I am not alone with this, when and how have you found access to politics?

Why is politics important to your life?

I find that people consume way too much news that doesn't affect them or for things that they can't even do anything about and it's not great for their emotional or mental health.

That was my thought process as well for quite some time. Well I would like to create art, maybe theatre plays, maybe inventions and I feel like if I want to tell or do anything I need to understand the world around me to know which impact whatever I create will have.

I get most of my news on twitter these days.  Much of what is reported in the mainstream media is not really relevant to anything but at least what you see on X is whatever is capturing the attention of the zeitgeist and you'll see many different perspectives.

If it's for the sake of creating art, maybe look into whatever is intellectually or emotionally provocative to you.

That's like getting most of your food from the dumpster behind the store.

Don't be surprised when you catch mind herpes.

You're better off not consuming politics or social media, which is designed to feed you "dirty laundry" to keep you coming back for more. Normal people, who focus on their normal everyday lives, and cultivating social connections, getting ahead in their careers, going partying and vacationing, are doing it right. Activists tend to end up miserable... they are addicted to the drama and the polarity, finding some "enemy" that needs vanquishing in order to try to pursue what they feel is some idealized version of society that is never going to happen. Politics attracts people interested in power for power's sake often times, or the pursuit of wealth. It attracts people addicted to drama who say they aren't addicted to drama.

Too much left/right bullshit on the internet... both cults full of what I would dub as brainwashed people.... people who often think they are superior to the "sheep" when it's actually the opposite.  Anyone who is part of a niche group full of like minded individuals who think they have all the answers, should be taken with great skepticism.  Most people live their lives in spite of their leadership, not because of it. We are just stuck with them due to our genetic nature. Someone has to be in charge.

It's not because I see what other people care about and how they're thinking about things and then I do my own research on why they think that way, what the truth actually is, and deeper historical research on the causes leading up to whatever it is they are freaking out about.

The corporate media is largely for "entertainment" purposes and often provides a very narrow and dogmatic view on issues.  It tends to ignore a lot of stuff that you'd find on twitter as well.

There are legitimate journalists on twitter as well that you can follow to see what they are writing about.  My boomer generation parents closely follow cable news still and they barely know what's actually going on.
