Aluminium in deodorant (antiperspirant)

7 posts in this topic

Just wondering peoples thoughts about using a deodorant with aluminium or 0% aluminium.

some say aluminium build up would happen (as you’re using deodorant everyday) and some say the aluminium amount is so low/minimal it’s inconsequential

As always as soon as one starts to look on the internet there’s such conflicting thoughts either way so unsure what to think .. thanks 🙏🏻

As someone who sweats under my armpits pretty badly, I'd say just use deodorants (not anti-perspirants)

Anti-perspirants clog up your pores and make you sweat more in other places. And they eventually make you sweat more in the places you do use them too.

I'll use an anti-perspirant occasionally if I'm going out partying or doing something where I really don't want to sweat under my pits a whole bunch, but using them every day isn't really necessary if you use deodorants to kill the bacteria that produce the smell.

The direct correlation to something like cancer is impossible to make because all we have is observational data so we'll never truly know whether aluminium is causing disease or not.

But the avoidance is nowadays so easy that its probably worth looking into some alu-free alternatives of which there are plenty of on the market. When travelling, get the closest thing to what you would consider "natural".

When at home, just wash your armpits with a soap couple times a day if the odour is a concern :)

There is also something to be said about the balance of your skin microbiota under armpits. I don't know enough about this to speak with confidence but it is possible that using some types of antimicrobial antiperspirants could be disrupting the balance of the flora on your dermis and could be responsible if the smell is particularly bad. The 10% Human book by Alanah Collen refers to a product helping to "rebalance" the flora under armpit and she claimed it was helpful....I've never put it into test so can't comment. But potentially something worth looking into if you find this to be a major problem.

It’s related to alzheimers i heard.

Here we have so many option without aluminium. But when i was in latin america a while ago almost or all had aluminium. But i have to say the ones with aluminium work much better. They seal it off. Anti transpirant vs deodorant.

The mainstream perspective holds that there is no clear evidence suggesting that the aluminum in deodorants poses a significant health risk. This conclusion is based on data from several epidemiological studies. However, these studies come with significant limitations, and it would be misleading to claim that they definitively prove aluminum’s safety.

On the other hand, the alternative viewpoint asserts that aluminum in deodorants greatly increases the risk of cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer’s. Yet, this position is also based on an overinterpretation of inconclusive research and lacks solid proof.

The reality lies somewhere in between: we simply do not know the full extent to which aluminum in deodorants may impact our health. Given this uncertainty, the wisest approach is to minimize exposure whenever possible as a precautionary measure.

By the way, the golden rule for any product that uses the nebulization process (deodorants, hairsprays) is to avoid inhalation at all cost! I personally tend to hold my breath when I apply those products.

@undeather thanks. So the nebulization process you’re trying to avoid would include bathroom fragrance sprays I guess?
what do you do for smells around the house? Plug in ones?

Yes, this includes bathroom sprays. I use them only when absolutely necessary, but I prefer to leave the room and wait until the scent has dissipated. I'm not overly obsessive about such things; I simply aim to minimize exposure whenever possible.

Personally, I'm not particularly drawn to fragrances, bu there are many potential room scents, such as those based on essential oils.
