How to use reddit in a healthy way?

12 posts in this topic

I find reddit really helpful sometimes because you can get practical help on almost any question you have: exercise, technology, growing mushrooms, whatever.

However, it has also a ton of garbage and I always end up consuming some of it even I go there with good intentions. And it's also very easy to get distracted and to just start doom scrolling through posts.

Due to its usefulness, I am hesitant to delete my account and to get rid of it completely. But I also find it very hard to be disciplined enough to use it responsibly.

Any tips?

Takes certain level of mental fortitude and wisdom to sift through a swamp of all kinds of toxic stuff on the internet to find the gold.

Key for me is discipline to stick to time limits, Seems 30 mins or 60 mins is optimal. Also be disciplined about which threads to read. I used to feel obligated to read a lot of the top threads. Now I browse more and am very selective. I do regard it more entertainment that improvement but this too has its place. I also keep updating the subs I follow to keep the content I see fresh. Overall I think reddit is the smartest never-ending conversation out there.

You could always moderate your usage by using only one or two good subreddits everyday. And looking at other ones when you specifically need or want something,

@Something Funny Download an app blocker and block it until like 8-10PM when your productive day is over anyway. (strict mode, so you can't deactivate the block during block hours).

Seriously, do this. You can always uninstall it if you don't like it. I've been using app blockers for a year, so I'm talking from experience.

Anything that is fed trough algorithm is appealing to the lowest part of your psyche. Only allow search bar queries. That goes for YouTube as well. There’s great stuff out there but they ain’t recommending it to you.

but how? With youtube there are extensions. I am only seeing my subscriptions for example. With reddit there is no such thing.

With your mind. You set a rule for yourself that you’ll only use the search bar. Takes some discipline & willpower. Maybe there’s an extension out there I don’t know.

Reddit is as far left as maga is far right. There's not much healthy about it anymore.

For years i thought reddit was just about supplements and nootropics and it was quite helpful.

Then at some point i downloaded it and found out there’s a reddit for everything and it was quite consuming and fun.

Then years later i found out that there’s lots of porn on reddit and at some point had to delete it. :(
