Should i pursue a philosophy doctorate ?

14 posts in this topic

The pros: potential for earning decent money. I have a passion for wisdom and truth seeking.

The cons: i don't know if i will fit well with the academic system.

I came to the conclusion that just working for money, isn't doable. I wanted to pursue a degree in computer science, however like i said without passion, i won't be able to do it. Without passion i can work a brain dead job like at starbucks or a waiter or whatever. However to create a career it must align with some of my passions, which are: rap music, art, seduction and attraction, philosophy, sense making, wisdom, and spirituality.

Very hard to get a job in that.

Money will be very tight.

It's not a good idea unless you know for sure that is your niche and nothing else will do.

@Leo Gura I can teach philosophy at university. I want to die having lived a life devoted to wisdom. Do you think it is wise to enroll in university for a decade or more to get this doctorate in philosophy ? Or should i go with computer science because it requires less years, even though i will not enjoy it, because i don't necessarily like computer science ? The thing with philosophy is that i love it, so my passion would be covered that way.  Plus i'm excited to teach students in university about wisdom. what do you think ?

Also part of the pros of the computer science path is that i will make more money in less years, which will be optimal for pick up and dating, however like i said the con is that i don't like it. I don't know how to make pick up work if i am pursuing philosophy.

If you were in my position what would you do ?

Those jobs a rare and hard to land.

You have to be very serious and commitmented to even have a shot at one.

If you don't enjoy a field, you will not be successful in it.

Frankly, I don't see that you are serious enough to land a philosophy professorship. These are extremely competitive jobs even for the most outstanding doctoral students.

Either you get extremely serious about it, or you pursue something less competitive.

I don't want to discourage your passions, but you also need to be very realistic about how competitive academic positions are or you will waste 8 years of your life chasing a fantasy and be left broke and jobless in the end.

To be a philosophy professor you need to have some genuine talent and skill for heavy philosophical research. It's kinda like chess. To play chess professionally and make a living off it requires hardcore-mode.

@Leo Gura If you think i am not serious about philosophy then you don't know me enough.

Btw do you think it's not possible for someone who's really passionate about philosophy, and your work for example, to get a job as a university professor ?

Passion is not enough, you have to master navigating the academia system and bureacracy.

As I said, these jobs are rare and hard to get. Obviously it is possible. But is it wise for you to limit yourself to such a narrow game?

Academia does not reward wisdom. It rewards your h-index, which is largely based on herd social dynamics. Saying this as someone who is going to pursue a PhD.

@Leo Gura Then given my passions outlined in the original post, what do you think i should pursue as a career?

Plus i think i will enjoy writing philosophical essays, i don't see a problem with it.

I can't answer that for you.

You should think through and research your options very thoroughly yourself.

Do lots of research into your options. Your best options you don't even know exist yet.

@Leo Gura I came to the conclusion that i'm gonna study 4 years of computer science, to get a decent salary relatively faster, and be able to fix my dating life. Then i'm gonna study for a doctorate in philosophy, to create a meaningful career, where i am passionate afterwards.
