How Would You Do Spirituality/Psychedelics Differently If You Could Start Over?

13 posts in this topic

@Leo Gura I noticed your recent blog post on psychedelics being harmful if you aren’t careful. I have never done psychedelics before, but I would like to get into them after I have met all my other basic needs.

Knowing what you know now about psychedelics, false gurus, false new age nondual traps, and how psychedelics have affected you, what would you do differently if you had the chance to start over and do it again in a next life?

Anyone else is welcome to chime in.

It's hard to answer because mistakes are an important part of the work.

But the gist of it is:

  • Be more rigorous with psychedelic protocol. Don't assume you will be safe.
  • Do not believe any New Age claim unless demonstrated.
  • Do not assume any spiritual teacher or guru has a full understanding of God or Consciousness or Awakening.
  • Be extra mindful of spiritual fantasies and parroting stuff you read in books or hear in talks. If it isn't part of your direct experience, regard it as speculation.
  • Think through everything for yourself and be mindful of all the "humanness" that infests all spiritual teachings.
  • Be extra mindful of developing a spiritual ego.

I never got started understanding spirituality  until psychedelics so I feel like I did it perfectly. I didnt know anything about it enlightenment or ghosts or conciousness and anyone who said stuff like this i would call them retarded. 1st time taking 1.5 gram of shroom 20 mins later I see that I am God. My spiritual path was not knowing anything about it until the end and I surrendered at the right moment cause I was going to kill myself. It felt like god saving me.

Obviously my life is not over but anything I learned after was not spiritual as learning about spirituality is not spirituality. It can help but its better not to know anything and not to strive for anything and just live life with complete abandon until it happens. That means don't worry about dying and just do what you want. You cant not walk a path.

If striving for immortality is hidden behind something like a fear of death it is better because then you are REALLY looking and you have a time limit and the fear will grow and crush you. Then you can blast off.

Having that fear grow and crush you may be required to let go but make no mistake that is a dangerous undertaking that when taken lightly can truly maim you. Sometimes people just get crushed and dont make it to the other side.

I dont think people know much about fear until they lose all faculties while conscious under psychedelics. It is unimaginable,  no amount of torture or shenanigans could result in that experience. Like more real than a dream yet more absurd than any dream. Like a lucid dream.

In the future with different policies, protocols and study I'm sure psychedelic risk will be a lot lower. We face discrimination,  criminalisation, demonization. Sometimes the mental toll of not being supported by your community (ie all drugs are bad at all times) can be more significant than a negative trip.

Be highly skeptical of all things new age.

I fell for way too much of that stuff.

Nice guys!

I was lucky to have read Peter Ralston and Jed McKenna as my first spiritual books off of Leo’s booklist. That helped set my foundation in contemplating for myself and deconstructing Buddhism ideology.

My journey feels like it has only just started, so I wouldn’t change a thing because I haven’t really made any big spiritual mistakes yet. I have been wrong about reality and still am. I would have probably have spent less time watching the Atheist Experience and less time exploring new age thought but that was part of my development.

It’s a contradiction because the cost of openmindedness is spending a lot of time studying human BS. At some point you gotta have your priorities and stick to them, while also being open at the same time.

@QuaderI was very scared of taking mushroom I didn't fuck around I took a tiny dose.I respected what I was doing and the insanity comes from disrespect. I definitely didnt take the easy path. I am still mentally ill my brain is still shitting on me but it gets better everyday. Sometimes I look back and I cry because I feel like the path hurt me more than it needed to. But now I know God and can forgive myself and God and everyone.

I cannot talk about anyone else's life, every journey is dangerous that's what makes it fun and real and we will all die. If you die at 19 or 97 you go to the same place and there is 0 time difference. All memories and life are saved then erased.

I cant say that what I did was stupid or wrong because I was unconscious the whole time. Life is a tightrope walk blindfolded. Fking up means you can try again. God will save you everytime.

Which is why I am reading some of my old posts now and cringing at them :S

Start deconstructing subtle biases, assumptions, and stereotypes sooner.

Record raw insights, pay no mind to the fact they're not perfectly articulated, that can be adjusted later. While looking for the best words to use you may lose half the insight. Also, very crucial, no matter how uncomfortable, force myself to record insights on the comedown from trips, while my consciousness is still somewhat elevated, little time has passed, and the essence of the insight hasn't been lost during sleep or dulled by a benzo.

Be fully honest with about what desires am I avoiding, which ones can be surrendered, what habits do me more harm than good and sneakily make me unhappy.

Not use psychedelics as an escape, instead work on rewiring my perception to see God in everything, especially the boring and stupid stuff.

Instead of trying multiple flavors of essentially the same psychedelics, find a select few that work the best and focus on those. Will have saved me tons of money, then again to find the best ones I had to go through 60+ substances first.

Use more effecient ROAs sooner, cultural stereotypes blinded me to them.

Start a meditation practice before trying psychedelics. After the fact I don't even bother because it's such a pittance in comparison, so the only sober methods I currently have for raising my baseline level of consciousness is contemplation, observation, and dreams.

Don't tell my family about psychedelics ;) Similarly, don't discuss spirituality, especially the deeper stuff with normie humans, particularly family, it will only lead to disappointment, misunderstanding, and rift in relationships. Let the mountain come to you, no need to force truth on those who don't desire it.

Foresee plateaus and regresses, get through those with a positive mindset rather than getting depressed.

Very deliberately create a life purpose that keeps me effortlessly motivated all day every day from the get-go.

No i wouldn’t really do anything differently with psychedelics and spirituality specifically. No regrets on that front. Was quite cautious. Did lower and higher doses. Usually made a kind of ritual of it. Never fell for any kind of guru/cult thing.

I kinda regret smoking weed but there was really no control either.

I openly share with my closest family members that I do them. In fact, they fund all my psychedelic usage ;)

People from the blue light drug harm reduction site have info on mixing Molly and NN and even mixing Molly with 5meo. With the m+5 combo you need to take a lot of care as there is possible harm that can happen, but minimal if you lower both doses. But m+NN is extremely good, removes all fear. If I went back I would never have done a single NN trip without m. Although m is addictive and neurotoxic so max once every 3 months or so. Fear on NN is very difficult for most, m conveniently removes all the fear and guarantees a good trip lol, handy.

Also if your trying mushies or lysergic invest in some trip killers. It's handy to have a button you can press to just end a trip if it's going in a bad direction. :)
