People essentially drink alcohol because other drugs are illegal. And because it usually comes in the form beverages that go well with food. And because people make fun little games out of buying and consuming it (expensive wines, wine tasting, visiting wine farms, stacking up their wine cellars). But purely as a substance, in terms of its effects and side effects, it's not that good.

Have you ever tried beer and wine?

It works just as well for introverted people. And introverts need it more.

The point of alcohol is to help people loosen up and enter a social state which is otherwise hard to enter sober. It gets you out of your head.

I've concluded alcohol doesn't makes me less introverted. It just makes more weird, less controlled, more psychotic. Speaking as somebody who accidentally front flipped down the stairs dressed as Walter White while on a mission to hand out vodka to as many people as possible.

I've probably tried both in the same drink.

I made this horrible drink (Corona Sunrise) a few times at some parties and I just loved the concept but the taste was like you want to cry (meh, it wasn't actually that bad, it was just this one girl that couldn't handle it and I can't wipe the memory of her frowning while tasting it 😂).

The most pukeworthy drink I've ever had would be pure Hennessey cognac on an empty stomach (but it hit). Aquavit comes second.

@NewKidOnTheBlock Your not a weirdo, i am in the same boat. Alcohol just does not work well for me too. It only made me more shy and insecure, then when i am sober. I am generally more confident sober.

"Some beers with the boys" - if done responsibly, meaning not regularly (every day) and in reasonable quantites will most likely not damage your liver, even if that behaviour lasts for a lifetime. There is a tiny percentage of people with extreme genetic predispositions for pancreatitis, liver-fibrosis or cancer (Aldehyde Dehydrogenase Deficiency) - but those are thankfully extremely rare.

Zero alcohol is, of course, always the healthier choice - but most people overestimate the dangers of low volume alcohol consumption (See picture - data from a recent meta analysis). Alcohol related diseases and especially alcohol-addiction ARE big problems in our society - but I am always a big fan of honest education and understanding than making a certain subtance the devil.

Beer does not cause kidney stones.

Let's say you got drunk once in a year. Or once every couple of months. I think most people can manage that. Not completely drunk, just a couple of drinks. It's usually to loosen up in a party setting. Helps to have long conversations especially if you are introverted and nervous. I have seen people drink and then they laugh like crazy for hours and it's a fun evening for them which would have been boring otherwise. Of course there are downsides. It's not a great solution for social anxiety but I agree that it helps with inhibition slightly.

Yes i completely agree, I dont like it for its downsides, its basically poison but I can see why people like it and it has its place.

@Michael569 how much alcohol do you need to get drunk, usually?

You need at least 2.5-3 L of that to know what drunk is. You were buzzed. Drink 4.5-6 liters and you will black out.

If it was your first time you might have gotten drunk off 1L I dunno.

Careful, he said it was 8%. 1L of 8% for someone with zero tolerance is actually quite rough. That's about six 0.33L cans of normal beer or eight 0.25L bottles.

@Carl-Richard No one has ever died off 6 beer. I dont think 1L of 8% cider equates to 6 beer. Its like 3-4. If I were to tell someone whats a good number of beer for a 1st time drinker to get the feeling of drunk I would say 6-8. Or 2 -2.5 ciders. 4-6 is probably a little high, I dont know if he could drink 5 or 6. But Im not sure you can die before you pass out on cider. I think you will just get sick and black out.

I wouldnt suggest hard alcohol to anyone as I have seen people come close to death.

This is just all speculation as no one knows how it will effect the person until they do it. I do not think a first timer drinking 6-8 beers is dangerous. The body is not just going to give up and die 99.9 percent of the time.

Did he do anything he wouldnt normally do? No he didnt do anything he wasnt drunk he was buzzed and drank too fast.

If you wake up the next morning and say I just sat there and was giggity you arent drunk. Being drunk means waking up the next morning and saying what the fuck did I do last night. You are surrendering to the drug the same as any other psychedelic.

You were actually talking about consuming 15-18 beers to get drunk, 27-36 to black out, which with 0.33L cans is definitely close to death territory if excluding metabolization (which is only about one beer an hour anyway). It's of course hard to consume that much beer quick enough, but once you're in that territory, all it takes is a few shots or mixing the wrong drug. And of course, the risk of dying from other sources also increases a lot (hence my front flip down the stairs).

I said six 0.33L beers.

6*0.33L*4.5 = 8.91

3*0.33L*4.5 = 4.455

1L*8 = 8.

My estimate was 111.4% of the actual value, yours was 55.7%

Again, it's harder to go all the way with cider or beer alone, but it's easier to take it a significant part of the way while other things finish it.

That's a very legit and smart argument.
That said, I think that when comes to beer consumption in particular - we also see a huge amount liquid going through the kidney/ureter (through the sheer volume of the drink and the diuretic effects of alcohol), which is exactly what counteracts the build up of kidney stones. Even if that is followed up by a period of relative dehydration in the circulation, the urinary ducts are relatively well flushed most of the time. Let's not forget that the buildup of kidney takes weeks to several months at least - so any "negative" effect of the period would be compensated for by the sheer volume of liquid.
