Why do I get sleep paralysis so often?

75 posts in this topic

I wasn’t sure which subforum to put this in but I figured this would be most suitable.

It’s not important for me to know this but it just makes me curious. In my life I’ve had probably upwards of 100 episodes of sleep paralysis. There was a period a few years ago where I would have it really often. And recently I’ve had it too very often. For example this morning was crazy, I had maybe upwards of 5 separate sleep paralysis episodes, with astral projection several times and hallucinations. I can also get intense vibrations, feeling like energy shooting up my head etc. Once my head convulsed.

I wanna point out that I don’t find sleep paralysis scary, I have maybe been scared twice or something in my life because of it. I don’t get scary hallucinations, I find it somewhat fun to explore it especially astral projection.

I also don’t have too irregular sleep patterns. I can sleep for a long time if I don’t work for the day, so maybe that’s a factor. I don’t have problems falling asleep.

Once a guy told me if you get a lot of sleep paralysis it can mean you have an “old soul”. I haven’t found any additional info about that.

Feel free to share if you’ve had similar experiences.

Wow, that's crazy.

From beasts we scorn as soulless, in forest, field, and den,
the cry goes up to witness the soullessness of men.

I usually don’t see that much even if I open my eyes, but things in my environment can change shape, I can hear sounds like a voice or shouting. My environment tends to look very “murky”

From a spiritual perspective the OBE is from previous existences and an energetic thing. From a materialistic perspective it's neurological.

The tactile, visual, auditory, etc. modalities are all the same thing just through different perceptual filters, like you'll have a single force moving through all of those with the same pattern, so if the visuals are really overwhelming the tinnitus or screaming might be as loud as a buzzsaw or whatever.

It also means you might have talent to get into that same state while awake, working with the bright colors you see in darkness, watching the colors come out of the body and feeling the electricity.

Maybe it’s both the material and the spiritual perspective at one time. What do you mean by the OBE being from previous existences?

It’s usually not very overwhelming. I usually have quite subtle hallucinations.

I haven’t explored it in waking state and I’m not particularly interested in that since I get enough of it when I sleep (although sometimes I sleep during the day and I get it during the day)

It is, yeah.

If in a previous human or other existence you learned to go out of body in a past life, or you learned that energetic space somehow.

OBE from the vibrations is a very unusual skill and very disconnected from natural patterns.

The easiest way to have it is to cultivate it.

If you have it naturally it's statistically likely because you cultivated it previously.

Already said but that's happened several times to me when i didn't sleep the night and felt asleep between 6 and 9 am. I suppose it's because the body fall asleep because of fatigue and keep being conscious besause of excessively high level of neurotransmitters implied in consciousness.

Sometime if i meditate and tilts my head down i can feel the vibrations in question, they seem to be coming from the spinal cord so i suspect GABA/Glutamate axis is involved.

It happens spontaneously for me, it’s kinda like I focus my attention on a place outside my body and then I separate from my body and float towards that place. I think it’s cool. I didn’t even try to cultivate it , only maybe a few times I’ve actively tried but then it didn’t work, it came spontaneously

Or have been an insomniac like me :ironic smile:

Btw there is a book called "Return to the brain of Eden" who proposes (all things considered) sleep deprivation as a way to get spiritual experiences "without efforts".

I dont fall asleep that late so it can’t be that, but I do sleep in for a long time, and I can get sleep paralysis when I’ve slept more than I need.

So certain neurotransmitters that are abundant in the brain during consciousness make you awake during the rem sleep causing the sleep paralysis?

Cool didn’t know. Seems there’s a link between the science and spirituality.

I have experimented with it a bit.

This is a failed case since I didn't continue with it, but I could return to it later.

Basically I am meditating with pranayama and trataka and other weirder stuff for seven hours everynight.

I was inspired because Sri Aurobindo in the Alipore Jail fasted for ten days and would only sleep every three days.

and that's when this was:

Quote

At one time I thought that physical Siddhi, spiritual power over matter, was impossible. But in the Alipore Jail I found once after my meditation that my body had taken a position which was physically impossible: it was actually raised some inches above the ground; there was what is known as levitation. Then again, I practised for a time raising my hands and keeping them suspended in the air without any muscular control. Once in that condition I fell asleep. The warder saw me in that posture and reported that I was dead. The authorities came and found me quite alive. I told them the warder was a fool.

When I have slept more than I need I can get sleep paralysis. So maybe that’s because I’m laying down and my brain thinks I’m asleep but I’m well rested enough so I remain awake and have sleep paralysis. Due to my brain being in a awake state and maybe having those “conscious” neurotransmitters you mentioned

That makes me wanna try sleep deprivation lol
