What type of pan to buy?

17 posts in this topic

Saw the post with the spatula, @Leo Gura you said to not use it on teflon or non-stick. I got a pan from Walmart recently not sure if its teflon or not I tried to take one that didn't have the non-stick but it started to discolour and have a strong metallic smell after rincing it with hot water so I'm pretty turned off by it. What pans do you recommend?

Stainless-steel is king (You can find several tutorials on youtube on how to make steel quasi-non-stick)
Cermaic is also fine!

@LordFall I use cast iron. I've heard that iron can leak into the food though so maybe stainless steel or carbon steel is better but I really enjoy cooking in it. 🙂

Nah bacteria can easily spread on wood utensils they have to be cooked a lot to kills the bacteria. The benefits of non stick pans is that you cant really damage them so stainless steel utensils can be used with them.

Do you have hypochondria for cleaning your hands after you shit? There are just general rules of hygiene to follow which includes cooking wood utensils regularly if you use them.

I do it for comfort, to smell good.

No, where i am, no one cares, everyone cooks with wooden utensils and no one gets sick
The only person i've met who gets sick often is an American living in France, americans also seems have more allergies; The main difference between the two countries in terms of hygiene is that the French eat a lot more raw products, particularly vegetables, fruits, milk and meat (especially beef).

And as i said everybody cooks with wooden utensils.

You cant make proper science with just your personal observation. And if wooden cookware would be that terrible that everybody would get sick because of it it wouldnt even get sold as it is easily replaceable. So of course I am talking about a relatively small benefit for health but still a no brainer because there is little to no downside in using stainless steel cookware.

No i wouldn't, i think.

Being clean is a matter of comfort, it is different from being afraid of being infected. I wash often, I'm almost a hypochondriac, but that doesn't stop me from not caring about eating raw products.

I'm not basing this on anecdotes, I got the thing about allergies from a bacteriologist.

Cast iron pan. Stainless steel pan. Ceramic pan.

I currently use a ceramic pan.

Try glass cookware, I just bought a pan and I love it. The best brand is Vision. Glass is the best material, it's inert and doesn't have any toxic chemical. Glazed ceramic and stainless steel may contain lead, cadmium or other heavy metals.
