How to Use Personality Type For Personal Development

16 posts in this topic

I'm posting this because I think it would be useful and this forum is likely to be open-minded about it. The bottom line is this: you can find your personality type and use it for personal development. Your type will give you insight into your human nature-- that is, your strengths and weaknesses, and unique traits.

The best personality typing system is the 16 type system which is commonly known as mbti (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). You may have heard of it and know that it gets a bad rap for being "unscientific" or something like that. Hopefully if you guys follow Leo's work you'll be able to tell that this is close-minded skepticism coming from the materialist/scientific paradigm.

The system is scientific in that it is based on observation; the 16 personality archetypes were first developed by Carl Jung by observing his patients and having insights into human nature. He theorized that there are certain cognitive functions that people may use and prioritize in different proportions. Before I continue, let me clarify that I am aware that this is a model and the map is not the territory. However: this is the best model for human personality type (based on nature) that exists to this date. If you study it well, it will be shocking how much it reveals about your own personality and that of others.

Here are the 16 psychological types:

INTP, INTJ, ENTP, ENTJ

ESTP, ISTP, ESFP, ISFP

ENFP, INFP, ENFJ, INFJ

ISTJ, ESTJ, ESFJ, ISFJ

  • There are the perception functions (for how we see the world):

Intuition and Sensing

For abbreviation, Sensing gets S and Intuition gets N

They come in introverted and extroverted versions, so you get Se (extroverted sensing), Si (introverted sensing), Ni (introverted intuiton), Ne (extroverted intuition)

  • Then the judgment functions (for making decisions)

Thinking (T) and Feeling (F)

Which also come in introverted and extroverted versions

Te (extroverted thinking), Ti (introverted thinking), Fe (extroverted feeling), Fi (introverted feeling)

A person's ego is made up of four of these functions in order of priority

For example, the INTJ has:

Ni, Te, Fi, Se

What does this mean? To put it simply, the person leads with intuition that is inward-focused and convergent. They are great at it and it's what they prefer to use. As a helpful secondary tool, they have extroverted thinking that helps them get by in the world. Their way of thinking is based on data and the opinions of others. The third function, introverted feeling is kind of like a little kid: they have morals that they live by, but it's not their strong suit. Finally, the person will struggle with physical reality, living in the moment, and performance anxiety as a result of extroverted sensing inferior.

How to find out which type you are:

The standard way is to take an mbti test. There's nothing wrong with doing that, but it tends to be inaccurate. Instead, first get a better understanding of what the 16 types are like. You may get a sense of which one seems like you. Through doing research about the types and using some introspection, you should be able to correctly type yourself.

This post is getting long, and I couldn't cover nearly everything to this system. If you know some things about the 16 personalities/ mbti or you're hearing about this for the first time, please comment with your thoughts. I'll answer any questions since I'm very knowledgeable about this subject.

TL;DR: The mbti/ 16 types personality system is a great tool for understanding yourself and others, and you should learn about it and use it.

Mainstream mbti is stereotypical crap .

Use 4 sides of the mind by C.S Joseph(YouTube) .It is very effective (if your mind can hold abstractions a little bit)

Learning about Si taught me to become better at pretending to be a socially attuned drone by talking about things I've done rather than things I think about.

That’s actually exactly the kind of “mbti” I use! I was trying to explain it in a basic way for people who don’t know much about it

I’ve found it quite challenging to determine where I truly fall on this spectrum, as Jung’s cognitive functions are far more nuanced than the stereotypes often associated with terms like "Thinking" or "Feeling." The simplifications we use tend to obscure their depth.

For instance, while I’ve always been deeply intellectually and philosophically inclined, I resonate much more with the Feeling type. It’s not that I disregard logic, facts, or data, but my focus lies more on how ideas connect to the human experience and how they evoke certain aesthetic and emotional dispositions.

At the same time, I’m also more extroverted in a fundamental sense: I’m far more attuned to and energized by the exterior world than by introspection. All my intellectual efforts, in one way or another, are oriented toward engaging with and influencing the world around me.

This is why online tests always label me as INTJ, likely due to my philosophical leanings and strategic thinking. However, if I were to choose a label that feels truer to my nature, I’d describe myself as ENFJ, not in the stereotypical lovey-feely, agreeable sense, but more in the sense of being very enchanted by desire and the intensity of otherness and multiplicity.

“Did you ever say Yes to a single joy? O my friends, then you said Yes to all woe as well. All things are chained and entwined together, all things are in love; if ever you wanted one moment twice, if ever you said: ‘You please me, happiness! Abide, moment!’ then you wanted everything to return!” - Friedrich Nietzsche

I already said type yourself by functions not mainstream MBTI .

You sound like an ENFJ and btw ENFJs can be deep thinkers because their 4th function is Ti(Ti in aspirational is extremely logical ).

Watch in depth video of C.S joseph on ENFJs or INTJs to know yourself clearly .

I also think there can be a natural progression in many people from one type to another.

In my favorite novel, Le Rouge et le Noir by Stendhal, a young provincial cleric who has spent his entire life studying scripture and embodies the traits of an INTJ sets out to achieve success in the "real world." He eventually finds himself in Parisian high society, where he immerses himself in the social and power dynamics of the court, transforming into an ENFJ.

@Carl-Richard That is Fe function not Si , Si is related to past memory , attention ,comfort, loyalty , endurance

I sometimes use Fe to judge what Si is relevant to start talking about, but mostly somebody will just start talking about their Si and then I will respond with a Si that is similar. What Si my mind brings up is mostly done spontaneously through mostly Ne, but sometimes I can stop and use various judging functions to determine whether it's relevant enough.

To put it in non-MBTI terms:

I sometimes use my attunement to the values of other people to judge what personal experience is relevant to start talking about, but mostly somebody will just start talking about some experience they've had and then I will respond with an experience that is similar. What experience my mind brings up is mostly done spontaneously through intuition, but sometimes I can stop to think about whether it's actually relevant enough.

I believe I'm INFP at my core, but I often come off as an INTP; INFP in INTP's clothing  But some dude insisted I was an ENFP, so idk.
