Recommendations for a serious, long-term spiritual practice?

It's true you have to do the work, but in my experience the notion of "not able to follow a teacher" is a trap unless you were born already maximum awake, which almost nobody is. So if you are still asking for more then that means you know there is some kind of "teacher" ahead of you, or you wouldn't even be asking about it. Reading a book or forum answers are not different than following "a teacher". At the end of the day you had to listen to "somebody" .

What if the so called "spiritual practice" you are looking for is mostly "following the right teacher at the right time"?
