Living in America my whole life, this gives off a kind of ~Orwellian~ or totalitarian vibe. Like... I can only imagine people in North Korea doing something like this.

Mostly cause it's the same guy doing it for the 25th year in a row. The tradition goes a ways back to the USSR. In Murica there's a presidential address on Thanksgiving I believe, fairly similar. But of course in Putin's regime something as innocent as this has been turned into a subtle display of power.

I am fluent in Russian speech.

I listen to Putin in Russian. The American translations of Putin are quite bad. I could translate him more accurately.

I think it doesn't matter, to be honest, which language you watch him in. Putin is akin to Trump - he is constantly lying.

It's annoying to me that American media cannot find better Russian translators. It casts doubt on all their translations of anyone.

Isn't this part of the narrative, like with Saddam Hussein and other "enemies of the USA"?

The idea seems to be: "Don't listen to them directly: listen to what we tell you they are saying."

Maybe I'm overthinking it, but it could explain why proper translations aren't prioritized.

I need to learn Russian to understand the mind of Putin and their way of life. Everything is so mysterious and dark about Eastern Europe/Russia. So much has happened over there, and still is.

They just don't know it's even happening.

Hopefully AI can soon lay this problem to rest once and for all across the board.

Normal everyday people have no idea how many incredible and shocking things are happening in the world. We only know what we see and what we are told.

Just imagine how much is hidden. How many large-scale conspiracies are there that no one will ever uncover? Your jaw will drop if you get to know them.

How much Putin, Trump, Kim Jong, etc.  are hiding from the world? This makes me so mad. (All political leaders, not just these 3).

Living in Russia is brutal. Here are my notes from the past few weeks:

- People are scared of each other and pass this anxiety as a self defense mechanism

- Many have problems with their inner child part which translates into codependent social behaviour and lifestyle decisions

- Corruption of state power lead to a loss of holism and rationality in peoples worldviews. Rise of postmodernist absurdism ideology. Extreme gaslighting

- On the bright side, i've noticed a spike of interest in new age movements recently.

My parents are for some reason urging me to live in Russia for a year after college for cultural experience and language training. Good or bad idea? Your thoughts?

Once the current situation has settled down, it could be great for you. Living there will quickly cut through a lot of western fantasies you hold, witnessing unprecedented levels of corruption and brutality of survival will sober one up and give a newfound appreciation for your lifestyle and the systems that enable it. I lived there till 14 and moved to Spain, had I just been born in a European country with no exposure to the third world I'd be much worse off in many ways. It's always funny discussing with friends here, when I tell them of the corruption that goes on in Russia they get wide-eyed in disbelief. In the EU some politician misappropriating 100k is a huge scandal that's in the news for weeks, in Russia that barely rises up to the level of concern of a local police department in some shithole town. Kinda awesome that people here are politically conscious to this degree, even if sometimes it slips into excess. That's a mark of higher development.

Some advice, Moscow is not Russia. In many ways Moscow is more advanced than western capitals. Living there is super comfy, but you'll have to travel around the country to get the true experience. Be ready to leave at a moment's notice, make sure your documents are in order, that you're not registered in военкомат. In theory you should be ok, living abroad is a valid exemption from service. Study the laws carefully so that you're never caught off guard. Paying some fines or bribes is fine.
