Compute: The Most Important Resource

7 posts in this topic

In the future, the economy will be entirely driven by computational power running AI. The only way for the government to generate the economy needed for a universal basic income is by owning computing power to run AI agents; that is where the money will come from.

Here is a list of countries with an approximate ranking of their compute resources:

1. United States - 100
2. China - 90
3. Japan - 70
4. Germany - 60
5. United Kingdom - 55
6. South Korea - 50
7. France - 45
8. Canada - 40
9. Singapore - 35
10. Netherlands - 30

The above are the countries that currently have the most compute resources and are the only ones equipped to handle Universal Basic Income at all.

2025: AI agents will become popular, and some of the most basic jobs will be replaced.

2026: AI agents will improve significantly, and mid-level jobs can now be replaced.

2027: AI agents will be so advanced that every job can be replaced by AI; it's only a matter of implementing it.

2028: An AI will be created whose intelligence is not measurable by any test; it can only be measured by itself through a self-referential loop, similar to how the chess ELO system works.

2029: Every disease and invention will be Invented it's only a matter of who's willing to put the compute resources into it.

Obviously past this point Humanity cannot survive.

- It is very likely that a couple of people will control the majority of the AI agents and people will be left out of the loop completely because they lack Computer Resources. Whoever owns Computer Resources owns the world and the entire economy.

- A alternative non-a doomsday scenario is that we use decentralized systems like Solana and Ethereum to create economies with AI agents that then fuel Universal basic income for the masses. Everyone can be a miner and contribute to the economy in that way.

I understand your perspective better now - you're specifically focused on how economies can generate enough value to support universal basic income in a world where AI systems are the primary productive force. Let me reconsider this through that lens:

In a scenario where:
- AI systems become the primary economic value generators
- Energy becomes essentially solved through AI-driven fusion
- Research and development is primarily AI-driven
- Traditional industries become minor contributors

Then you raise a critical point - countries would need substantial compute resources to:
1. Run productive AI systems that generate economic value
2. Create enough surplus to fund UBI for their populations
3. Remain competitive in AI research and development

This creates a challenging dynamic where:
- Countries without significant compute resources wouldn't be able to generate enough economic output through AI to support their populations
- They couldn't easily catch up since the leading nations would continuously advance their AI capabilities faster
- Traditional economic activities might become increasingly marginalized

Would you say this leads to three potential paths for countries without substantial compute resources?:

1. Form strategic alliances with compute-rich nations
2. Invest heavily in building compute infrastructure even at the expense of other sectors
3. Develop new economic/political frameworks for compute resource sharing

What do you think would be the most viable path for compute-poor nations to avoid being left behind in this scenario?

@integral I have never before considered you to be that naive. Where will the energy come from to power that AI economy? This compute time is not a free meal. It takes electricity to run and water to cool. Scarce resources. Scarce resources that humans need.

The planet has endless energy all around. Energy is not a limit.

Information is a much bigger limit for AI than energy.

We have unlimited energy. But all the world's information has already been exhausted by these AI leeches. They have already stolen all the information mankind has produced in the last 2000 years.

I am not sure, a lot of technical information is never published as PDF, so they couldn't have leeched it from the internet. Elsevier has scripts of science books that they published and printed that OpenAI and the like have never ever seen.

It is a substantial limit in the time frame Integral proposes. Infrastructure doesn't appear out of thin air.
