Most movies are disappointing nowadays?

21 posts in this topic

Nowadays most movies are just so disappointing. I'hve just watched Gladiator II and it was such an anti-climax after the prequel that was made more than a decade ago. Most movies are so unpersonal and superficial; just soulless. Gladiator I had a soul to it. Such a powerful movie with a powerful message. The warrior archetype displayed with all of its grief, glory, gory and grandeur. A movie greater than life. Movies like Forest Gump and shit. Too sad.

Yes, I find it almost a bit scary because it shows how soulless mainstream culture has become. This is cinematic flatland: all surfaces, no depth. There are only a few good filmmakers left, like Paul Thomas Anderson, Giorgos Lanthimos or Lars von Trier.

“If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives and maybe even your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery--isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance, of how much you really want to do it. And, you'll do it, despite rejection and the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods, and the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is.”

Mainstream yes. Niche not necessarily.

Watch some Karsten Runquist to get good new niche movie recommendations or just go on Letterboxd and look around. There's always something worthwhile to watch if you take a bit of time to search.

I just finished watching Carol (2015) with my gf. It was interesting, we had many thoughts. https://letterboxd.com/film/carol-2015/

I've got Infinity for a head and I have a hard time handling it.

2022-2024 have been some of the best years for movies. It's like a small golden age. You are watching wrong movies.

Here are some good ones:

  • Banshees of Inisherin
  • The Zone of Interest
  • Aftersun
  • Saltburn
  • Menu
  • Killers of the Flower Moon
  • Poor Things
  • The Substance

Also, there are dozens of good European/Korean movies out there, you just have to look for them.

Ever seen the movie CHLOE. Pretty good. It's about an escort and a wife that hired her to see if her husband would cheat on her with the escort, and she ends up sleeping with the wife instead.

This trailer kind of reminded me of that movie.

It's not the woke mob, it's corporate hyper capitalism.

Hollywood is corrupt and creatively bankrupt. The whole industry is now about milking old IP to death and catering to dumb teenagers with no taste or depth.

Why would Gladiator 2 be any good? It is a sequel to a perfect film that never needed one. These kind of sequels are just a scam. Why would pay to see it? The solution is to stop falling for the Hollywood scam machine. Don't let them milk your love for classic films for profit. That's all it is. Only pay for original films.

There are many great movies nowadays

From beasts we scorn as soulless, in forest, field, and den,
the cry goes up to witness the soullessness of men.

As your consciousness expands movies in general will appear very bland and predictive, you will eventually realize they bind you to a type of matrix that keeps your expression and abilities limited to the conditions of the box or screen you are watching, you will be able to see through them and they will look more and more artificial. This is especially noticeable when you come back from being in nature for a while or coming down from a psychedelic exp[experience. Even books are starting to become dissatisfying as our consciousness expands, forcing us to create more ourselves and tap into our own movie or book of life.

And the worst part of it all is that IMDB rating are way off. People gave a 6.9 to the soulless creation called Gladiator II. Just sitting through it was a torture. I wouldn't even give it a 2.

Mainstream movies are like nowadays mainstream women. Too puffed up and too much make-up. Plastic surgery and aspiring unnaturalness. Big attitude and lack of self reflection. Too big of a body count and not lack of truth and acceptance. Absolutely no taste and lack of a personality/agency of their own. Too focussed on the outside and not on the inside.

These movies have absolute no depth. It is all about puffing up cheap emotions. It is such an abomination. I looked out for this movie for months. The movie Gladiator was so dear to my heart and they shat on it.

It's especially hard to find good historical movies these days. The last good historical movies were made around 2010.

Which ones?

  • Agora
  • Arn Tempelriddaren
  • Black Death
  • Ironclad
  • Centurion
  • The Eagle
  • The Other Boleyn Girl

Just to name a few. Some of them are not historically accurate, but based on history.

Most of them are highly underrated on IMDB.

None of those are historically correct at all 😂. Agora is a good one although it is not historically correct. The others meh.

Still much better than Gladiator 2. Historical movies are not profitable so they are dying. Just be happy with what you have or go watch documentaries 😉

I'm watching movies not for accuracy but for the soul of it. If I want historical accuracy I will go for documentaries. I agree that Agora is a gem.

Yes, if Agora was 100% historically accurate, the ending would be a bloody mess and Christians would never let it go public.

Modern indie films have never been better. Problem is the marketing models for indie films suck.

Go to film festivals if you want to watch great stuff.

Blockbusters are financially forced to cast too wide of a net to be truly great, with few exceptions. Also a big studios goal isn't to make good movies, it's to cheat on tax.

Hollywood accounting is biblically corrupt.
