Going to university just to make a lot of money, is it wise?

41 posts in this topic

My plan is to go to university, major in computer science, to be able to make money and then pursue my life purpose which is being a rapper. The advantage of pursuing this degree is that i'll make decent money, and i'll be able to travel, and also afford the logistics to make pick up works. Then afterwards i'll be able to invest in my life purpose. This sounds like an optimal plan to me.

Programming requires such a different mind and personality from rapping that you will probably fail at one or the other if you try to do both.

Do not pursue programming unless you have a very technical mind and love to code.

If you are serious about making music you can major in various kinds of music theory.

@Majed A degree doesn't mean much these days. What matters is your skill and passion.

If you're unable to do the work then it won't pay well.

@Leo Gura The problem is that i don't know how to turn passion and skill into money. with computer science it is clear, study hard and you'll get a degree and then you can get a well paying job. With rapping it is much more unstable loosey goosey and unclear. I wanted to go in an institute that teaches music production, important skills for rapping like beatmaking, mixing and mastering, but i don't know if i will get a job after finishing the institute.

I only do things I enjoy. Working only for money is terrible -- almost unbearable -- once you have basic security.

Ok, when I was broke, it was somewhat motivating, but once I accumulated a couple years worth of living expenses in savings, it became almost impossible to get myself to keep doing what got me there.

One caveat: there is a certain wheeler/dealer type of person for whom making money through trade, sales, and financial schemes is enjoyabe. For those people following the money is its own reward.

But, doing something very technical and demanding like programming, with no intrinsic interest just so that you can sell your labor time for money, is a really bad idea.

I am not saying you can be a professional rapper, but probably if you try (and most likely fail) there will be something related that emerges that you can make work economically.

When you really commit to a thing you enjoy, various opportunities start emerging seemingly from nowhere. When you do things only for money the whole world becomes this very tiring, draining place, and you might as well not be alive.

@Majed Have you actually coded anything? Do you understand what full-time coding work is?

This work will disappears soon because of AI.

Don't buy the hype.

AI cannot do real programming work. Not even close.

All this AI stuff is shallow and surface level. It doesn't do serious work.

I employ full-time programmers. No AI can replace them. The very idea of replacing a programmer with AI is a joke.

You should try it first before you make your plans. Many of your fantasies will be dispelled.

Go program something, anything. See how you like it.

It's a matter of time.
A matter of time before an AI can do Leo Gura lessons in a few minutes, everything you have built will be in vain, whether it threatens your ego or not.

@Leo Gura My passion can't make me money. And without passion i can't succeed. Make it make sense.

Don't be so sure about that.

Doing what I do ain't so easy. Parroting me is not the same as generating original insights.

There are many ways to make money in the world. Why limit yourself to something as specific and technical as programming?

That's what you should research.

There are many high paying jobs.

Look at the expotential progress of AI. Now you can already find lots of funny deep fakes on youtube.
In a few years, maybe a good decade, and it will be.

I am a full stack developer with  over 10 years of experience. Yes AI will not replace software developers soon. BUT software developers spending time on real coding is almost obsolete.Ai can do faster and better.

I don't know how it works in game development, which is very special, I would think about your employees if they really are that good if they don't use AI.

With AI, a person can write rather simple programs.

I'm using Claude AI to write a program in Python to automate part of my job so that I can focus less on repetitive stuff.

Also, I'm refreshing my knowledge of Python.
