If you mean by your bidding analogy that another person would only be interesting if others were also actively interested in them, I feel like this is a pretty immature way to look at relationship prospects that wouldn't lead to good relationship outcomes.

If you need social proof and "other bidders" to be interested in someone, then you're not really interested in that person.

You'd just be interested in chasing the social status of being with that person.
