I want to leave Ukraine, but is it worth the risk?

70 posts in this topic

The large-scale war has been a part of my life for almost three years now, and I’m starting to feel like I’ve had enough of it. I’m looking for ways to leave the country.

Right now, the only options are: to pay a huge bribe to get my documents fixed so I can cross the border, or to find shady people involved in human trafficking across the border. Both options are extremely risky. If I get caught, I’d go straight to the frontline.

I have a cool apartment and a well-paid job aligned with my life purpose. But society here is filled with anger, despair, and pain. We have a curfew, drones and rockets attack the city every other night, and recruitment patrols walk around constantly, so I don’t feel free at all. I don’t feel like I’m meant to live here, but the risks of leaving the country hold me back, leaving me to wait and see how the conflict unfolds.

The problem is, I have no idea when the war will end, and I don’t want to spend all of my 30s in a country at war.

What would you do?

What if you get caught but you have a broken leg or something that makes it so you can’t fight

@Raze No, only men with disabilities are exempt from recruitment. A broken leg can heal in one month.

@porque man, I am really sorry that you have to go through all this.

It's really hard to say what I would do in this situation. I think you definitely shouldn't try to get smuggled or cross the border illegally. Even if you make it, what are you going to do next? You will be staying illegally in a foreign country, it would be its own can of worms.

If you are able to leave by bribing some official on the Ukrainian side, and then enter another country legally, that could work. But you would need to be sure that it will work.

Trying to hold out in Ukraine could also be a valid option.

Both options are high risk, basically. either you risk to spend who knows how long leaving in a war zone, assuming you won't die, or you risk getting caught trying to escape, and then you are also fucked.

The best plan is probably to get the most out of life you have now, while keeping your eyes open for opportunities to leave that might appear and learning about the ways you could escape. It seems like you have a solid job, at least. That's already something.

@porque A totally random idea, and maybe things don't work how I imagine them to work at all, but what if you became a truck driver?

There are still Ukrainian truck drivers who transport cargo to the EU, right? If this is the case, you could actually leave and enter the country legally, and then just bounce once you cross the border.

@Something Funny That's exactly what I'm thinking! I know I need to take full responsibility for my life, but I also need to consider the risks. On one side, my life here is not super bad, but on the other, I don't feel free. I don't even mention a chance to be killed by a rocket or drone because it has become so mundane.

If you can hold out a few months, Trump says he is going to end the Ukraine war.  The inauguration is January 20, 2025.   Gonzalo Lira tried to escape over the Ukraine border.  He was caught and ended up in prison where he died.

@Jodistrict We get promises that this war will end soon, starting from the third day of this full-scale invasion. If nothing changes soon after Trump's election, this will be a definite sign that it's absolutely not clear when this war ends.

Can you get a fake disability

I would probably figure out a way out if it were me. Only if you have a significant amount of money saved up, 20-50k USD ideally. Then have some crypto so you have transact globally and lookup how to whitewash it so the government can't track you. Investigate which route is less risky bribing the government or the mafia and try it out. Definitely wait at least a couple months after inauguration though to see what effect Trump actually has on the war. Spend the next 2 months until then educating yourself on the things I talked about and gaining a deeper understanding of the system. Make friends with mafioso and government officials, take them out for drinks, etc whatever you gotta do network and gain crucial information.

You can also take the safe route and just build an online business so you're basically transacting globally anyway and building your life purpose and wealth and in a few years when this is done you'll be in a good position anyway.

@LordFall I've done a lot of research already and have a few connections. I can get a fake disability for $20k, but it still doesn't guarantee a 100% chance of getting through the border—more like 60-40. Waiting a few months after the election is a good idea; that's what I was thinking. However, if nothing changes, it will be time to make a hard decision: make the best out of life here and wait or take the risk.

If the risk of leaving is 60/40, that is not good odds. You are better off staying. Don't gamble your life on a coin flip. Especially as the situation could change dramatically in 6 months.

Your current situation doesn't seem too bad. Remember, things could get much worse for you if you do something risky.

But you can plan to leave if there is a ceasefire. Be careful because a ceasefire might be temporary. Putin could easily re-invade, so use that opportunity to leave if it comes.

Fairly tail he can't do things. Blackrock vested billions into this war.

Not only them but the whole military industrial complex of EU and US.

Trump himself said he wasn't for stopping it really. Like there was a lot of doubt because he knew that it's not dependant of him.

When you put 300B in a war in expectations to put the lands in debt for you to quadruple cash for the next 30 years you don't just say ' hey let our big competitor keep that oil/gas filled land' and loose 300B.

Not gonna happen.

@AION and? If everyone thought like him there would be no need to defend Ukraine because there would be no war.
