How did that work? Did he get permanent damage/debilitation from it or was it enough to be shivering for a day to escape the draft?

From the reports I have read, no papers will help you at this time. They see you they take you. No questions asked. There is good reason to think that the war will end soon with the inauguration of Trump. Nothing is guaranteed either way. 

There are a couple of questions. You do not need to answer theme publicly here, they are just a few metrics for assessing the situation. 

1. Are you in eastern Ukraine, where they are not a significant number of forced conscriptions? Or are you close to Donbass? If you are in the eastern side, you are most likely safe. 

2. How often do you see the recruitment officers kidnapping people from the streets? Is that a common occurrence in your area? If you then you might need to leave. Keep connected with the local population to know the status. 

3. I really do hope the war will end within a couple of months with Trump and the inevitable collapse of Ukrainian army. Do not get conscripted at any cost.

No permanent damage.
