Truthful and well-paying jobs.

33 posts in this topic

Hey guys, since I'm actively searching for new jobs, and actively following Leo's blog posts.

And it seems to be that being good at business, generating money, being good at sales ect. is somewhat directly correlated with the exploitation of ignorant people.

Ergo the more ignorant someone is, the easier it is to sell him something.

And even if I would not work as a sales person directly, chances are high that being a well paid employee of a company means that the company leaches of the ignorance of their costumers somewhere else. Am I right?

To make it even more a abstract: Truth ≠ Money

However I want to make money, and don't want to sacrifice truth all together. Of course I don't want to make millions and don't want to become the next Jesus. So there is certainly some leeway in that equation for me.

So, do you guys, know of any jobs, that are simultaneously truthful, well-paid and personal developing?

My thought was to work in solar sales, because it is well-paying, at least not directly bad to the environment (maybe even good) and certainly needs more development on my side.

Curious what you think.

Life Purpose Course is about this specifically. Or more broadly the idea of a life purpose: making a living through bringing unique, massive value. Win-win situation.

@The Renaissance Man

I’ve done the life purpose course. No real value bringing idea arose out of that. Just became more clear on my passions and values. But many interest don’t relate to the physical world that easily.

For example my interest in psychedelic therapy via psylocibin, ketamine or 5-Meo can really only be done through a proper psychological bachelors degree. Which I stopped after 2 years, because it was so darn boring and out of my interest zone.

Of course you can bootstrap a therapy program by yourself and with the internet. But that takes years of practice, learning, volunteering, self experimenting ect.

Which doesn’t pay my bills.

This is usually how my ideas came to a stop.

Also because I cant focus on a single project for long just on my self.

Perhaps being untruthful consciously is the solution. Being honest with yourself that you’re not selfless and have survival needs, and that’s perfectly fine.

After all, isn’t judging yourself for not being truthful coming from a place of ignorance ad well?

True, but wouldn't this attitude excuse every destructive behaviour in general?

Where to draw the line, for whats really necessary for survival, personal survival and my ideas of survival.

Isn't everything evil, just a survival strategy?

WHERE IS THE LINE?!

Dan Koe said it really well: solve your own problems, then sell the solution.

Solving your own problems gives you special competences that the market needs, and there you go.

A degree is not needed unless you need to be a surgeon, a civic engineer, or whatever.

But if you're currently searching for a job, solar sales may be great. You can always evolve from there in 1, 5, 15 years. Really, nobody ever said you have to start off with your life purpose. It's often just unrealistic and naive to think that way.

It should be an objective to live off that, in the long run, for the most fulfilling life. Right now you could clean toilets, and it could make sense in the grand scheme of things.

On the other hand:

  • What's the alternative? If you don't care about doing your life purpose enough, then it's alright to do something else. But the idea of a life purpose is about ambition, not settling.

Think you can create a successful business/life purpose without this? Not in theory, in hard, raw practice? It's very unlikely.

Why not stick to business related jobs and try to change that? I’ve come across real cases of successful entrepreneurs who do things the right way. They are the minority, but they’re out there. They run businesses that are not harmful to society, prioritize their employees, comply with the law, etc.

We need good people and humanism more than ever in the business world. I’m fed up of the stage orange hegemony!

Learn art. Anything with original creation, something which is meaningful to you.

In our current anti-economy, creativity is just another commodity to make money. But if you maintain autonomy you can build yourself to create something truly worthwhile and compound your value as you grow. The problem is the society being fast paced, you lose your money fast and you're forced to act quick and quickly get to making money. This is toxic and downright evil.

You need time, to slow down and dissolve what's already there. Then slowly build new things, which are true to your values.

P.S - NOT all society is fast paced. Live in a Tropical Evergreen biome. You'll likely need 1/5 of what you currently spend.

There are some high value companies which are heavily stage green, you could look up vacancies on those. Companies like Patagonia, Ocean Bottle, Giff Gaff, Guardian, Finisterre, Tony's Chocolonely etc.

You could have a look at the list of B-Corp certified businesses around your country. These are more likely to be engaging in sustainable business practices paying more attention to the longevity of the entire supply chain, the wellfare of the end manufacturer, farmers, avoidance of child labour, recycling practices, chemical spillage etc.

Art, engineering, programming, teaching, research. These are some options. Of course any of them can get corrupted.

Don't fall into the trap of trying to be a saint if all you need is a paycheck at this point of your life -- this can potentially hinder and paralyze your development. Truth can be your longer term overarching big picture value. Survival is brutal. As long as your job gives you enough income and time to work on your larger LP, and it's not pure corrupton, then it's a green light. I definitely resonate with you not being able to stomach much grifiting, but then again, being alive requieres to engage in Survival, and Survival is by default dirty business. You won't get far in life acting like a delicate snowflake. A degree of thick skin is requiered

It takes serious work, planning and strategizing to make a living in a honest truthful way. The default is to go with the flow of corruption. And that requieres bootstrapping yourself

Some blue collar jobs are easily accesible with not much effort, can pay well and grifting is sort of optional ( 😉)
Just wanted to share this alternative if you're not into someting technical like Coding

It sounds like you would be miserable in a sales job unless you're selling a high quality product to people or businesess that really need it ( or ideally your own thing )

This is an incredibly hard question to answer in our current societies and contexts. It is also one of the most important we can ask.

GDP and energy use have a 99.5% correlation globally. This means if you are adding to GDP you are increasing energy use. Energy use means more carbon in the atmosphere, more materials used, and generally more ecological destruction.

So the question becomes "How can you make money without adding to GDP?" Or "How can you add to GDP in a way that doesn't contribute directly or indirectly to energy use/ecological destruction?

Some answers could be by working with non-profits with missions to address real issues, working to lobby government to make systemic changes, or working in education and taking on the responsibility to educate people on our current disaster and how to make it through.

Non-profits have their own traps. If you are truly successful in your non-profits mission then you are making yourself obsolete. You are incentivized to treat the problem rather than solve it.

Ultimately the answer for you is different than the answer for me which is different than the answer for every other person reading this thread. We all have unique non-fungible perspectives, skills, and contributions to make. Read up on the metacrisis to profoundly understand how our interdependent systems wreack havoc. Once you get the gestalt of it you will much more skillfully be able to assess how you and your ambitions can best contribute to a better world.

I'm sorry there is not a better answer. But unfortunately, a vast majority of occupations right now exacerbate all of our problems. This is tricky work.

FYI - if anyone is interested in more deeply understanding our current contexts and how they can find work that aligns with their internal compass and benefit the world you can email me at shanehanlonwork@gmail.com. I do not charge for this.

Maybe try technical writing.

Technical writers are specialists and generalists, with broad understanding of multiple fields.

The bottom line is that most jobs won't cut it in terms of alignment with " Truth "

In the end you will have to carve out a path for yourself rather than working for the man if you really actually care. Working for someone else, aka outsourcing either sales, marketing or service delivery / product creation ,  almost garantees a degree of corruption. Becoming a conscious entrepreneur is the main way to be aligned with your own strenghts, values, pregerences, genetics, etc -- hence the Life Purpose Course

Caring too much about Truthfulness when struggling to make end's meet is silly and not something to be that proud of. That's not the hill to die on

Feed this entire thread to GPT and brainstorm with it. It can provide great answers when you don't settle for superficial responses and keep diggings and setting a frame that fosters thoughtful responses.

Energy use is going to continue to rise globally. Expecting anything else is impossible at this point.
