How or why didn't more white voters vote for Trump in 2024 than in 2020?

1 post in this topic

Even though most of the voting demographics throughout the country shifted towards Trump in this election, one peculiar thing I noticed was that Kamala Harris actually got about the same percentage of the white vote as Biden did in 2020.

Look at the voter demographics for this election according to the Edison Research exit poll for the 2020 presidential election in this Wikipedia page:

Now, look at the voter demographics for this election according to the Edison Research exit poll for the 2024 presidential election in this Wikipedia page:

Even AP News showed the same percentage of the white vote she got:

CNN's further breakdown of that same Edison Research poll for 2024 actually shows that she got the same percentage of the white male vote as Biden did in 2020 and a higher percentage of the white female vote throughout the whole country than Biden did in 2020:

Interestingly, the 2024 Edison Research poll revealed that Harris tied Trump among white voters aged 18-29, a feat even Biden didn't achieve in 2020! In fact, Harris is the first Democratic presidential nominee since either 1964, 1978, or 1996 to match or surpass her Republican opponent's percentage among this demographic, except for Obama in 2008!

Finally, what's even more interesting is both the 2024 Edison Research and AP VoteCast polls revealed that Harris tied Trump among voters 65 and older, a rare feat for a Democratic presidential nominee, considering old people or senior citizens tend to be more conservative, nationalistic, racist and xenophobic than younger generations of Americans. Since the early 1960s, Lyndon Johnson (1964) and Bill Clinton (1992) were the only Democratic presidential nominees before Harris to achieve that feat. This disparity highlights the significant age-related divide in American politics, with younger voters overwhelmingly supporting Democratic candidates, while older voters, particularly those 65 and above, consistently lean Republican.

It turns out that prime-aged white voters (30-64 years old) or middle-aged white Americans (40-64 years old) became the MOST conservative, nationalistic, racist, and xenophobic voting bloc in the country. Latino voters under 65+ years old became the second most conservative, nationalistic, racist, and xenophobic voting bloc in the country.

So, did xenophobia play a larger role than racism or sexism in Harris' loss to Trump?
