Perfect sleep as soon as you can.

54 posts in this topic

I've listened and read Matthew Walker, a sleep scientist, and I've come to the conclusion that sleep is, by far, the best tool for personal development, going meta, having healthy relationships, consciousness work and living happily. It is just mind-blowing. The education system is criminal for forcing teenagers to go against their biology (read the book for understanding this statement better). I've always hated when my mother used to wake me up at 6:30 in the morning to go to school, after going to bed at 00:00 as any other teen governed by their biological transformations, which includes a shift in your circadian rythm at that age, would. Now I understand why I struggled the way I did back then, and this still is to this day something that I cannot come to terms with. I don't blame my mother I blame the system, in fact my mom usually allowed me to stay in bed which was the best thing that could happend to me in that moment, and everyone around me of course used to call me "lazy". Such a shame.

If you research the matter enough you will view sleep in a more mature way, taking advantage of it and not neglecting it anymore.

I make this post because I intent to share this knowledge with as many people as soon as possible, since we as a collective neglect sleep on a daily basis, and even sometimes we feel proud about it.

I am changing forever the way I relate to sleep after reading this book. All the credits to Matthew Walker.

This book covers, among other things:

  • How sleep regulates the inmune system.
  • How sleep is essential for memory formation, and how a sleep deprived brain will boicot any learning attempt.
  • What is sleep? Why sleep exists among all living creatures? Does a cell sleeps? And most important, why should you sleep?
  • sleep stages, body systems of sleep such as melatonin production, light exposure, circadian rythm, etc.
  • Other things that you should learn ASAP.

"Why We Sleep" on Amazon.

Why We Sleep Free Audiobook on YouTube.  Note: just a few first chapters, not the full audiobook.

Extracts from the book to convince you even further:

I am thinking of making a video exposing in great detail everything about sleep and why we should care. That would be a great service to mankind.

@Human Mint good share. There is not a lot to learn to have huge benefit. Definitely would agree it’s one of the most powerful tools.

I remember at uni I was stay sleep was pointless and only got 5 hours some days. Big big mistake. Fortunately I only this this for one semester and reversed it.

Anyone who says they’re enlightened on this form in anyway is not, except me I am.

I was severely insomniac for 2 years, until 4 sleepless nights on a week ; Not sleeping is an absolute nightmare.

There are interesting studies made on sleep deprivation. One of them being that after 24 hours without sleep, you are impaired at the level of a drunk driver. Accidents caused by lack of sleep are as frequent, if not more, than the ones caused by alcoholization behind the wheels. The problem is, you don't need to fall asleep for 1 or 2 minutes. A micro-sleep will be suficient to cause an accident, which are the ones where you only loose consciousness per 1 or 2 seconds. Imagine a kid crosses the street at that moment, you will full on hit him, not even being able to react as a drunk driver would, slowly but reacting at least.

Your boss determines what time you get up.

You determine what time you get to bed.

I mean, if you're a parent and just had a baby then I get it. But in most cases you're just being ignorant... Like if you blame your nighttime shift then that's your own foolishness.

Point I make is that it matters not what time you have to get up

It's out of your hands and no matter what hour, it is neither intrinsically good nor bad

Your responsibility is in the time you do control

Do you have a good method to fall asleep quickly that we might not know about?

@Sandroew Yes, but sadly most people will never apply the techniques. Unless you're willing to stop eating more than 3 hours before bed, eliminating or regulating exposure to light 90 minutes before bed, not drinking alcohol, not smoking, then you're gonna have a bad time falling asleep, and what is worst, you're not gonna have a profound sleep. It is explained in great detail in the book and plenty of videos on YouTube aswell, I recommend checking Braian Johnson channel, he basically mastered sleeping. Its up to you. I don't care if you choose to sleep bad, although it will be great if you don't.

Caffeine disrupts sleep, alcohol disrupts sleep, digestion disrupts it, light greater than 5lux does the job too. A room too hot will do it, approximately you need it to be ~18°C depending on genetics. Thats because in deep sleep stages your body temperature plummets about one degree celcius.

As you can appreciate, there is not a single tip but rather a fairly complex understanding to have to tame good sleep. But the reward is by far worth the effort.

Not too quick :D. It would be pretty easy to just decide to go to bed early and falling asleep. Ever wondered why not everyone does just that? As I explained before there are a lot of factors that will determine what time you go to bed. Most of which can mascarade as insomnia but in reality are external, fixable elements.
