Overhead squats

5 posts in this topic

During my CrossFit class the other day, we did overhead squats. One thing I noticed with these is that they are extremely difficult, even with an empty bar. As someone who can easily bang out front/back squats with 25s on each side, I find that I can barely do an empty 35 lb bar on overhead squats. Has anyone experienced this before? I’m just surprised that at such low weight, I still struggled with the movement, constantly losing balance and moving forward.

I find the olympic snatch to be one of the unhealthiest exercises there are. IMO the overhead squat has so much potential for things to go wrong, and the wrists and shoulders are in a very unnatural position.

If you insist , I'd say working on core strenght, balance , shoulder press and squats individually would help you a lot

Yah, that's normal. I am a powerlifter, squatting 405 lbs/180 kg for reps and I still find overhead squats hard. My problem is I have low mobility in my shoulder from all the benching, so I can't get proper form. Idk if it's similar for you, but my tip is to work on that mobility. Standing shoulder press helps for strength.
