About Marketing

I wonder...

Do people really prefer to buy things promoted in movies? Does promoting a product for a few seconds in a scene generate a LOT of profit? So much so that they can pay the movie makers as well as make a profit?

〰️〰️

Becz I don't get influenced by what they show in movies OR any actor promoting any product on any platform. I see only the value a particular product provides. And I decide based on that.

They (we) do.

Marketing (successful marketing) can bring in some crazy money and that crazy money brings in crazy R&D money, which also brings in top tier psychology arms of R&D that will hijack into whatever you think you won’t do when you see a product on the big screen or your TV or an ad.

Here’s a funny realization:  even if you don’t buy any product influenced by showing it in a movie or show or whatever — subconsciously, your brain will associate that product with whatever it was paired to.

One example is, James Bond 007:  Aston Martin, Omega, Rolex, etc.  You don’t buy those things, cool.  But from now on, when you see an Aston Martin or a Rolex/Omega watch, you will associate it with wealth, luxury and James Bond.  Panache.

And that’s just ONE benign example!  It gets even more insidious in other types of products with marketing.

This is the answer. 👍👍👍

Still it's hard to believe this :

They are not conscious. They lose their self respect when they see a so-called star.

You have to keep in mind how marketing works:

1) Only 1/300 people will buy something. So the odds are very small, but with tens of millions of views it adds up.

2) Marketing makes you generally aware that a product even exists. This awareness is very subtle, but when you finally need the product you will know it exists to be bought.

3) Marketing makes you aware of a brand, so when you are in the store and deciding which version to buy, you buy the version you are familiar with.

4) Most of the time a marketed product will not fit your needs, but that 1/300 times you will eagerly buy it.

5) You might be outside the target demographic for certain product ads. For exmaple, product placements in Hollywood movies are designed to appeal to teenagers and young people who are very suseptible to such things. All the superhero movies are made for teens.

If I market some ass itch cream to you, you will ignore it. But in 5 years when your ass starts itching you will remember and buy it.

Exactly. 👍🏼👍🏼 I thought this way but I was in doubt. It's hard to make people buy something.

So businessmen use intelligent techniques for sale. Like Ambani did (he gave free of cost telecom services (Reliance Jio) for few months...). It disrupted the market and many other companies were closed.

I have seen ads of Facebook/Spotify 1000 times on YouTube, still I didn't create an account on it. Becz I've 100% clarity which social media platforms I have to use. And which not to use. I dislike Fb.

Whenever I think of Marvel movies I think of Ben and Jerry's because of one throwaway joke in Avengers. Marketing works.

That's ridiculous.

You're more than willing to pay a premium for a bottle of Coca-Cola over some generic brand - not because it objectively tastes better, but precisely because you want a taste of all the dreams and images that Coca-Cola has planted in your mind through decades of advertising and billions of dollars spent on marketing.

Of course, this was all financed by you and billions of others who were ready to pay their share of the marketing budget in every bottle of Coke you've ever bought.

I'm not even trying to critique marketing here.

The fact is, in a blind taste test, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Coca-Cola and a generic product. But once that label is slapped onto the bottle, an entire universe of imagery bootstraps itself into existence - impossible to escape from - and genuinely creates a deeper experience of the commodity.

So, in a bottle of Coca-Cola, the real is replaced by the hyperreal - the copy without an original; so much so that drinking a bottle of Coke becomes a metaphysical experience of hyperreality itself. It's an affirmation of the social matrix and the simulation that make this sublime experience possible.

I upvote this.👍🏼👍🏼

But understand this. I am not saying that marketing is useless. Marketing is as important as the product. (& packaging).

I am only talking about this :

Becz I was surprised that even this could generate profits !! It's such a tedious and decade-long process (to capture subconscious minds of millions...)

Coca cola is popular bcz it has done a strong marketing. Other generic brands failed. Why would I buy something I haven't even heard of? (This is the magic of marketing. )

I was wrong here a little bit.

Actually, "value" matters alongwith "branding/trust".

Just because an app (let's say Spotify) or watch is shown in a movie scene for few seconds (indirect promotion) doesn't mean I'll buy it.  But it does increase my chances of buying it in future. (Leo said it well...1/300 chance)

All my doubts are cleared now.

Very well written ♥️ :
