Indian Army in Lebanon as part of UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) watches closely as Israel-Hezbollah hostilities intensify.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) targeted several areas in Lebanon, hitting Hezbollah strongholds and ammunition storage sites. The IDF claimed to have struck more than 300 Hezbollah targets, disrupting the group’s plans to fire thousands of rockets into Israel.

As these military actions unfolded, the Indian Army remained on alert, operating from their position along the Blue Line—a 120-kilometre demarcation between Israel and Lebanon, established by the United Nations in 2000. Although this line is not a recognised border, it serves as a buffer zone, patrolled by UN peacekeepers. The Indian contingent, deployed there for decades, operates under strict UN protocols, focused on monitoring the area, ensuring peace, and responding to any threats against UN missions.

The Blue Line serves as a peacekeeping zone, and UN forces work to prevent conflicts from escalating between Israel and Lebanon. Though the Indian soldiers are not involved in active combat, they are responsible for maintaining stability in this highly sensitive region. Their primary mission is to protect UN personnel and peacekeeping operations, and to prevent any outbreak of violence along the border.

With the mounting conflict and constant tension between Hezbollah and Israel, the Indian Army is carefully assessing the situation on the ground to ensure the safety of Indian soldiers. Currently, around 6,000 Indian soldiers are deployed across various UN missions worldwide, with 159 having lost their lives during these missions over the past decades.

Located in the region since 2006, UNIFIL has been in charge of maintaining and monitoring the various ceasefires that have taken place between Lebanon and Israel. However, since the outbreak of war following the horrific 7 October attacks that left more than 1,200 dead and more than 200 kidnapped, the peacekeepers have tried to de-escalate the conflict by relaying messages between the Israeli army and Lebanese armed groups.

As neutral entities , the presence of the peacekeepers can possibly help to de-escalate the issues to some degree, bring clarity and allow a platform for dialogue and communication between the Israelis and Lebanese.

Why do you focus on Indian soldiers in Lebanon if they aren’t even the country who is providing the most soldiers there according to this?

Well, they are the second largest provider of soldiers at the moment over there.

UN Chief Antonio Guterres has commended  India For Troop Contributions To Lebanon Peacekeeping.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep appreciation for India and other countries contributing troops to the peacekeeping operation in Lebanon, where they face dangers from a growing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. At an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the West Asia situation yesterday, Mr. Guterres said the UN Interim Force in Lebanon, and UNIFIL peacekeepers remain in position, and the UN flag continues to fly despite Israel’s request to relocate.

He reiterated the deep appreciation to the military and civilian members of the UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL, and to troop-contributing countries. Nearly 900 Indian troops are with UNIFIL, which is deployed along the Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon.

So? Are you a Indian nationalist?

Why should we care about the Indian forces especially there? I‘m just a bit confused.

Also you wrote Tolle wrong in your signature.

India has the second largest army on earth which is a battle-hardened one as well.

It is the largest contributor of troops to UN peacekeeping operations ( over 275,000 to 51 missions ) and has also suffered the largest casualties at around 179.

I had created a thread over here in this regard of 3 deceased Indian peacekeepers of the UN who were honored   with the Dag Hammarskjold Medal this year.

Not many people know about these facts. Hence I felt the need to highlight Indian peace-keeping contributions to UNAFIL in the Middle East. India is also seeking a permanent seat in the UN security council.

If your country has contributed to UNAFIL, please feel free to state that over here.

My salutes in advance to the brave peacekeeping soldiers who are fighting for the cause of peace and stability in the volatile Middle East alongside their Indian brethren..

The role of the UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon, UNIFIL, was today "more important than ever", Under secretary-general for peace operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix told AFP.

"It's the only liaison channel between the Israeli side and the Lebanese side in all its components, such as Hezbollah," he said.
"It's fundamental because it allows us to clarify certain things and avoid misunderstandings... miscalculations, uncontrolled and unwanted escalations," he said.

War is a failure of diplomacy and it is said that the world wars could have been avoided if there were quality diplomats and diplomatic processes in place which would have prevented the botched negotiations then. The nations of the world make substantial investments in their military and only a fraction of that goes to creating a top-notch diplomatic corps.

I am glad that UNAFIL has created a certain space for diplomacy and dialogue between belligerent adversaries Israel and Lebanon as noted by Lacroix.

It struck me that a similar body of UN peace-keepers can come up in a buffer zone between NATO and Russia in eastern europe which can help to de-escalate tensions between the nuclear-armed foes.

As neutral entities, UN peace-keepers can also create space for dialogue and diplomatic channels between the two.

Two years have passed in the ongoing war creating widows, orphans and plenty of dead young men and civilians. Unfortunately there are no attempts at diplomatic negotiations and dialogue between the two.

Imo, the war in Ukraine is a similar failure of diplomacy and the diplomatic process, and I am hoping that UN diplomats and peace-keepers can somehow bring this ludicrous war to an end, by reopening channels for dialogue and negotiation.

Since India has the biggest population in the world.

Maybe you could just make one big India thread and post all news and issues relating to India in there?

If you have a phobia for India, which comprise one-fifth of humanity and is the fifth largest economy and fourth strongest military power in the world, that's not my problem. 9_9

I am also not a prolific poster like yourself and just post once in a while. Compare my 357 posts to your 4766 posts.  You can put me in ignore mode if you wish.

Also you have not given any data on your country's contribution to UNIFIL, which is the subject of this thread. xD
