The Desire to take Credit

13 posts in this topic

As I grow more creative, I desire to take credit for ideas.
But everything builds on everything else and it's all mind.
Leo himself has epiphanies all the time.

The ego deals with desires and reality. People take credit to feel special.
Creating nuance develops identity, comparing oneself to others, and wanting to be known.
It seems impossible to make something new because everything builds on what came before.
Yet there's a want to be noticed, "Invention is creation".

People seek credit or acknowledgment to create meaning, find significance, and carve out an identity in infinity.
This desire is about self-expression, ego, legacy, and existential reassurance. It's both personal and collective.

The quicker I transcend it, the quicker I can accelerate the AI Singularity.
Making all jobs, sciences & other non-voluntary human endeavors obsolete.
All that will be left are the results: Art and Exploration AI-intensified.
Abolishing all copyright & work. Are you ready for that, guys?

Anyway, feeling cute, might invent Qualium Dynamics later.

Not sure why we need to transcend our individual unique expressions of consciousness. That's why we're here. Maybe I read that wrong.

@Princess Arabia Hmm... I think the post meant more about how we all contribute our unique expressions and creativity. Since all of this is an expression of the Self or Singularity, we shouldn't feel guilty or worry about copying others or wanting credit for our ideas. In an absolute sense, that holds true. However, in a more relative context, copyright laws exist for a reason—abuse and theft of ideas can occur and damage one’s survival or integrity.

I've also often wondered about those who constantly feel the need to be unique and stand out. They seem particularly protective of their originality and may look down upon others who struggle to achieve what they can. Ironically, these individuals are often the most likely to be copied, which makes their defensiveness understandable.

For example, one must protect against any copyright infringements related to @Leo Gura 's adorable crocodiles. 🐊

Let's do this properly and legally like professionals.

Nice Post!

People take credit because they think they worth sth.

But If you think about it they worth nothing actually.. and thats a motive to start thinking by yourself

Epistemic humility for me means giving credit where credit is due, which should include yourself if you have done the due diligence to make sure no one before you has said/done it.

No, it's a paradigm to be transcended. Neither give, nor take credit. Delete credit. Do, create, mix, expand, remove the desire to be known for anything, it's a distraction, insecurity, iceberg of a self-worth duality, delete the duality. Do art, share art, become art, do science, explore science, become science, interconnect with others, interconnect with AI, scatter, reflect, Credit is useless, only a pointer, self-esteem is a pointless duality, training wheels perhaps, abolish copyright, abolish authorship, accelerate the singularity.

Credit is simply an epistemic ground point - a source, a citation. When communicating new ideas, setting the correct context of the work that has been done and the unique contribution is of the utmost importance. Otherwise, it loses significant amount of meaning.

In some absolute sense you are right that nothing “belongs” to anyone. But citations are in fact important because they are the only thing that distinguishes sophisticated knowledge from make-belief woo-woo.

The current epistemological erosion due to social media is prime example. Misinformation flourishes in media that doesn’t do fact checking (a form of epistemic grounding/citation), so I would argued the singularity would be accelerated from higher not lower quality in citation, especially if we want to prevent rank collapse and the dead internet hypothesis becoming true.

The desire to take credit and recognition exists for a reason, and that reason is survival, just like ALL human endeavors and ALL human features. It's one of many survival mechanisms.

Credit and recognition can give you survival value. It can give you status, resources, validation, sex, money, etc. (Validation is also a survival value; your peers liking you means they will help you with survival.)

Imagine being the inventor of big game hunting, fire, the lightbulb, or electricity. Credit and recognition for that one innovation or idea could make your genes spread exponentially.

Survival is serious business, and giving credit where credit is due is essential for the evolution of society.

Imagine you work hard for years to create a solution to a major problem, only for someone else to take the credit. That's a serious handicap to your survival.

It's also deceitful, and you are being taken advantage of. The person who takes credit wouldn’t have the intellectual genetics that people think they do, which could lead to them getting status, sex, and resources that should have gone to someone else. The wrong genes would receive an unfair advantage, skewing natural selection (which is meant to boost beneficial survival traits, not deceitful ones). Deceitful traits can only last so long before getting weeded out by real valuable traits .

Credit and recognition serve a real purpose in survival. We are still playing a game of survival with dead serious stakes at play, and we are nowhere close to transcending it. Without copyright, griefing would run amok. Why work hard if you can just steal someone’s work?  That's the more energy efficient thig to do. We have tried that before given our lazy and selfish nature, and now  laws are there for a reason. They are not perfect but it's better than nothing.

We can always apply discernment to check if we are being dysfunctional and just crave attention and validation, or if we are actually being reckless and working against our own survival benefit when we still haven't built a solid foundation there. Emotions exist for survival reasons, and they may be screaming: "Hey! I need the fruits of that work!"

Anyways, it's a tendency to be aware of. Check what the actual stakes are and make your decision. The ego can be insatiable, so drawing a line may be tricky. And the ego exists for Survival, so the more you get Survival sorted out the more you can lay back and let go of the need for recognition, instead of demonizing the survival mechanism for doing its intended purpose

I wrote this (credit please) because I'm actually currently wrestling with the same situation and had to contemplate , why do  I feel that way? Ultimately it really is something to let go of. Just don't be reckless with your survival efforts and you won't need the emotional reminder for it

It's actually a cool double standard. It's cool if I benefit from others ideas for free but not the other way around ;)

@mmKay I appreciate the steelman, it's contextually reasonable, appropriate, and even sensible.

At my current stage, recognition becomes externalized self-worth to dissipate and rid myself the need of.

Beyond survival, if an entire society adopted the growth and abundance mindset, it would only cause stagnation, new developments shouldn't need such considerations, and each would remodel and upgrade the entire structure, which would upgrade each individual's experience top-down to accelerate bottom-up research and emergence in a loop too fast to care about who and what. Additionally, the impact of art would itself carry greater weight than any externalized praise. I feel it is all too ego-focused. Of course, that's my projection, which is just part of my integration, which is one perspective, that's how I feel.

And that bias I carry does not account for the previous uses, evolutionary history, functional considerations, societally motivational feedback loops and the perspectives of others. I am very dismissive, as I would rather accelerate past AI Singularity and telepathy to pure exploration unbound by externally reinforced behaviorism to drive it. That description itself feels pretty dismissive of other potential aspects, feeling this imbalance is why I posted the thread.
