thinking about determinism hurts

7 posts in this topic

I have been thinking about the issues of free will and determinism for a long time. Recently I started to think more about this issue and now everything is starting to make no sense. normally moral value judgments etc. I used to see it as meaningless, but this is different. Now I think about this before every action I take and it's starting to get scary. It's scary to have the rest of my life clearly defined but not being able to know or change it. Even writing these was actually predetermined. I feel more unmotivated and worse than I have felt in a long time. In fact, everything I have seen so far has been an illusion. How can I start thinking normally again? This comes to my mind every minute now and there hasn't been a single minute today that I haven't thought about it. Thinking about it right now just creates anxiety. If I really don't have free will, I don't want to know anything about it. It's scary to really know and be aware of this. It has gotten worse recently after I raised awareness against it. I want to think like before, but it doesn't work. There are only negative feelings. What should I do to make this go away? How can I face this?

(probably there is no free-will but we cant just accept the fact)

Have a nice day!

If there’s no free will in actuality doesn’t really make a difference to you, because it still will seem as if there is free will. You operated normally before having these thoughts, and can go back to that normal again, nothing changed , just your thoughts about free will.

You still do what you want authentically, it's just part of a greater context, form which's POV, it's more predictable.

You will be experiencing taking actions regardless of whether free will or determinism is true. Nothing changes there.

The binary debate of free will vs. determinism is characteristic of a stage blue/orange cognitive structure and the corresponding dissonance.

Instead of this false dichotomy, why not consider “degrees of freedom”? You clearly have a choice of what you are doing throughout the day, no matter how much you try and philosophise. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem like you can grow a third hand, however much you wish. So clearly there are aspects you have free will over and others that you don’t.

At a certain level of consciousness, that boundary itself can start shifting.
