A World Without Religion

78 posts in this topic

I think religion is a cancer on humanity and a self-induced mental illness. Everywhere it goes, it perpetuates intellectual dishonesty, prejudice, misogyny, homophobia, death, and fear.

I think religious organizations should be taxed.

I think religion should not be taught in schools.

I think children should be protected from religious indoctrination in the same way they’re protected from cocaine, heroin, and crystal meth.

I think religion should not be used as an excuse for someone to slice the foreskin off a baby boy or the clitoris off a baby girl.

I think religion should not be used as an excuse for somebody to walk into a bank with their entire face covered.

Religion is basically somebody believing there’s an invisible fairy who lives in the sky. Why would you play along with another adult's delusion unless they’re mentally ill?

Look at it this way

Scenario 1

Doctor: Congratulations, Mrs. Smith, you have a healthy baby boy.

Mother: Thank you, Doctor. Now, how soon can I book him in to have his genitals mutilated?

Doctor: Mrs. Smith! That’s terrible!

Mother: Oh, no, you don’t understand - I read a book written by Bronze Age people who said I’m supposed to mutilate him. Asking for consent or caring about his wishes is irrelevant.

Doctor: Oh, yes, of course. I’ll just get my scalpel.

Scenario 2

Doctor: Mr. Smith, your 3-year-old son is bleeding very profusely after the car accident. But it’s okay, we can transfuse him and he’ll be just fine.

Mr. Smith: Oh, no, don’t do that. I think we should just let him bleed to death.

Doctor: WHAT?!!

Mr. Smith: You don’t understand, Doctor. I read a magazine that said there’s a big fairy in the sky who cries when someone has a blood transfusion.

Doctor: Oh, yes, how silly of me. You can go in now and say goodbye.

Scenario 3

Mr. Jones: Excuse me, sir, I’m feeling rather under the weather. May I have a bottle of your finest cow piss for me to drink, please?

Shopkeeper: WHAT?!!

Mr. Jones: Oh yes, cow piss. What else would I drink if I’m feeling ill? It’s magic because it comes from a cow.

Shopkeeper: Oh, yes, certainly. How silly of me. Here you go.

Religion is a self-induced mental illness and a cancer on humanity. We need to know how to live life in the best possible way to be happy, confident, healthy, and capable, and how to live in harmony with others and nature.

And we need to find answers to important, basic questions, like: Where did we come from? What is the purpose of life? Where will we go from here? What is this world made of? And most importantly: Who are we?

Our present-day science doesn’t give us the necessary guidance nor answers to these questions, as it is still in its infancy exploring consciousness.

Religion is considered the authority in this realm, but it has gravely failed us. In fact, it may have deceived us right from the start, less than 2000 years ago. By ‘religion’ I mean here the two biggest religions, which have almost four billion members and both of which claim to be the only ‘true’ religion.

Why do I say that religion has deceived us? Because these two religions claim that they know the full truth, but how can there be two different full truths? Moreover, how can religion, which is meant to help humanity, turn out to be most harmful for humanity with millions killed in its name?

No. We do not need a religion that tells us what to believe but prohibits us from questioning. We do not need a religion that insists, without any proof, that the whole world must follow it. We do not need a religion that tells us to look down on others for the sole reason that they are not members of ‘our’ religion. And definitely, we do not need a religion that even condones the killing of others in the name of religion – which has happened far too often over the last 1700 years.

So if neither science nor religion can help us, what do we do?

Luckily, the knowledge of how to live life in the best possible way is available, as are the answers to the above questions. It was memorized and preserved in the brains of long, long lines of many Brahmin families over many thousands of years. I mean the Vedas of India.

We do need Vedic knowledge. It is vast, too vast to mention here. It even includes what to eat or how to conduct the affairs of the state; yet the most important point is this:

The subtle essence in all is one and the same. The best description is Sat-chit-ananda = being blissfully aware. This is the real ‘thing’. It is the truth. And we are one with it.

If religion is the only thing preventing you from behaving poorly, it suggests that your true nature may be less admirable than you’d like to believe.

Have you got something to say? (; @Leo Gura

The end of separation is the end of desire. It’s life, it’s death, it’s unity; it is the absolute. In this profound realization, we find perfection eternal, a state of everlasting harmony.

The fundamental problem is not religion itself. It's way it's designed. Religion is like a software program. If you run an outdated Windows 97 program, you'll have frustration because it won't meet your needs. However you can modify and change this software to aid your processes. Similarly religion can be modified and redesigned to aid human survival and continuity. The problem is not that the design is not possible, the real problem lies in fundamentalism, when someone sticks to an outdated script and follows it verbatim, that's when a problem arises as it clashes with human liberty. If you remove dogmatism and fundamentalism from religion, then there are several parts of it that benefit collective human survival.

@Spiritual Warfare, sorry, but you won't be able to convert religious people. They'll come after you.

You can focus on the coming generation, though.

@Spiritual Warfare That was an obvious joke to point out your obvious unawareness and radical stance on religion. While you bad mouth religion you yourself speaks like a radical lunatic.

I enjoyed reading this. But the fundamentalism makes us hate normal Christians or whatever you want to call it.

While I agree that religion in its current form is about as lame as it gets, I think it's possible you're unaware that at the root of practically every single religion lies authentic mystical doctrines. Their founders were almost certainly exemplars of spiritual exceptionalism. And moreover, all religions are connected as being essentially identical and pointing to the exact same Truth, due to their similar teachings of the perennial philosophy.

If you're aware of religion's mystical origins and you just hate the hollow shell they've become, that's all well and good. But it'd be an act of great ignorance to trash them in their entirety.

You make religions exist because you need them to play you anti-religious persona.

Always the same story.

Yeah, you're right. I’m the crazy one who doesn't believe in fairy tales! I’m the crazy one who doesn’t believe because there’s not good evidence to support it! Yeah, you’re right; I’m the crazy one and not you.

Religion has something in it that people decide to accept it in their ways of life.

The anti religious ideas are not new they have been there from the start of every religion. Why do you think Religions have thrieved despite of that throughout the history of humankind?

It's not just a simple sky daddy thing that's a childish notion of religion actually almost no religious person ever thinks of God like that. Religions have much more deep wisdom and meaning for life within them.

I agree that the mystical is great, but unfortunately, it’s not what is preached today. That’s why I don’t want religion to continue existing.

Give me one good reason to keep religion, besides forming a community.

Yeah, you are crazy the way you are intolerant and totalitarian about religion. Yes, it has genuine problems but you need to make peace with reality as it is so you can be sane enough to make constructive changes.

Yes, but it’s not what is being preached in today’s society, and that is why it is a problem, my friend.
