American History X - just terrible

It's not terrible, but yes it's overrated and there is now much better movie with the same subject.

Wow. May I ask why?

I think it's absolutely amazing. The dinner scene is one of the best and most intense scenes ever made imo. It's so real. I can kind of confirm, as someone who used to be pretty far right.

Interstellar was a good movie ruined by a bad ending in my opinion.

Yeah, it was a bit of a letdown.

When you get older (and watch thousands of movies) you will become aware of how the directors implement various bullshits to make people fall for their movies and worship them. Or maybe not lol.

I like the new Dune films, mostly for the vibes and world. The story itself is not interesting.

How can the quality of a story be assessed/evaluated?

I tend not to analyze forms of entertainment too much and generally just go by emotional impressions.

There is a whole science to good storytelling.

But ultimately you just feel it.

The more you analyze stories the better you get at distinguishing the good from the bad. Many people don't do it so they are happy watching trash. Then again, if you analyze too much you will ruin any story.

It boils down to having good taste. That's what make artists good. They have exceptional taste.

Definitely. The problem with many filmmakers is they have not spent a second actually developing their taste.

Or an understanding of what works for an audience, outside of what they personally like.

The concept of aesthetics is so unvalued in the film industry. It's such a technical craft that few find the time to learn artistic principles. Those rare individuals are doing all the heavy lifting.

It's capitalism.

Hollywood makes crap films to sell to the masses, who don't want taste, they want dumb blockbusters.

Hollywood caters to teens, who are too foolish and impatient to value high quality films. Thus great films are rare and all the great franchises are ruined.

It's not so much that, it's capitalism.

That plays a role. It's definitely possible to make a highly profitable and quality film. It's just not the norm of course.

Dune, Mad Max Fury Road, Joker, Pirates Of the Carribean are recent examples.

It requires insane levels of leadership, creative taste, and systems thinking.

The few moments I've spent working with filmmakers of that level are awe-inspiring.

Their talent is to use the capitalist machine against itself to create art.

There is a fantastic book written about the making of Fury Road that details how George Miller and team beat the hollywood elites.

It can be done, but it's hella hard.

For example, the new Bladerunner flopped. Even though it was very well made and better than the original.

Bladerunner 2049 is spectacular. I had a full spiritual experience after I finished, realizing that what we deem 'human' is a construct changing with our conscious evolution. There isn't a clear 'separator' from ape to man, it didn't happen overnight. As is there no separation from human and what can only be considered Alien/Godhood, so might as well embody it now.
