How to prioritize books?

13 posts in this topic

During the reading of one certain book i always meet another better option, Book which i want to read. Then i left book that i started and continue with second one. What can you suggest about this?

First step is to set a direction of your reading/research, which will largely inform what is useful. I then sift through papers and books by reading the abstract and/or introduction and contents page. If something peaks my interest, I take a deeper dive. Nowadays you can use GPT to compile/ give you a resume and you can decide whether it is worth your time.

Take it little by little, even if you have to start with only 10 pages per day.
Then obviously, you move away from new technologies.

Maybe you can set your router to block/limit certain websites.

@Schizophonia you understood wrongly my question. Maybe its my fault because English is not my native language.

You can read 2 books at the same time, if they are both calling to you.

It is helpful to set small goals, like:

"I am going to read 10 pages of Book 1 every day"

"I am going to read 20 pages of Book 2 every day"

Is this book essential or supplemental?

What's my time frame for reading this book? / how many days shall I commit?

What's my criterion for not completing this book if any?

Is this body better scanned or studied?

Is this a forever book or a forgettable book?

Welcome and good luck with it

My rule of thumb: Anything serious do early in the day; If it's a side number, do it later on

This is a very good and important question and it should not only apply to books, but everything. Being interested in so many things is a double-edged sword. This problem has plagued me for a long time.

"Essentialism" should probably be one of your top 3 principles. Reality is full of shiny things and you will be attracted to and distracted by many of them. The problem is, there is not enough time and energy.

For example, if you need to focus on building a business, you do not have time and energy to dive into the vast world of medical science. It's very interesting, but you could swim around in that topic from now until you die, so you have to get "good-enough" information on important topics like health, and then focus on your business.

This principle is hard to embody but it's a force multiplier, and for me, probably the most important principle.

If truth is the guide, there's no need for ideology, right or left.

Maturity in discussion means the ability to separate ideas from identity so one can easily recognize new, irrefutable information as valid, and to fully integrate it into one’s perspective—even if it challenges deeply held beliefs. Both recognition and integration are crucial: the former acknowledges truth, while the latter ensures we are guided by it.

@Joshe man you are my gift. I am very fucking curios of the world recently. But there are so many things and i can't go into the deep. I'll print this book tomorrow.

@jacknine119 Yes, it is so easy to get lost in exploration but I also think it's a need that has to be fulfilled, so it can't be completely ignored or you will become unhappy. Balance is probably the second most important principle. 😂
