Can Meditation Be Harmful?

9 posts in this topic

I have been doing meditation for somewhat more than a year now. Since a week I started feeling very scared sometimes. Like there was something wrong with my body. I have read somewhere that when you meditate, hidden away fears and such can bubble up. Could this be the case here?

Regards,

Max

If you start meditation and you do not suffer, it means it is not meditation, but just a hypnosis. With a real, authentic meditation you will suffer more, because you will become more aware. You can see the ugliness of your anger, you can feel the cruelty of your jealousy, you will now know the evidence of your behaviour. When you meditate, hidden fears can bubble up, you will suffer. But this is how one grows. Growth is a painful birth.

Allow fear, and don’t give it a label – remain ignorant. Ignorance is a tremendously meditative state. Insist on being ignorant, and don’t allow the mind to manipulate. Don’t allow the mind to use language and words, labels and categories, because it has a whole process. One thing is associated with another, and it goes on and on and on. Just simply look – don’t call it fear. Become afraid and tremble – that is beautiful. Fear is one of the doors from where one enters into one’s being.

@Prabhaker So if I feel a little ache in my chest and my mind immediately says "There is something wrong with your heart!", I should just observe?

Thanks for your quick response.

Ache is not a fear, it is not an emotion, it can be real, if this type of problem persists, you can always consult a doctor.

@Prabhaker I have, the doctor said my heart is perfectly healthy. Still the fear persists. I get scared when I feel my heart beating fast or 'skipping a beat' this makes it worse and worse and a whole fear-physical cycle is created by myself.

If there is ache in your chest , it can be due reasons other than a heart problem, you can go to other specialist for your satisfaction.

If you are convinced that it is only a fear, just simply look – don’t call it fear. Become afraid and tremble, face it. Fear is one of the doors from where one enters into one’s being.

@Prabhaker Thank you, I will use your wisdom.

If this ache persists I will see my doctor to clearify that there really is not something wrong.

Open up your body, look into the sensation with awareness. Keep your awareness on the sensation, breath deeply and keep your posture right.

Even if there is something wrong, your awareness alone might heal it :)

It could be that you are not allowing space for your heart or you know, maybe you need to exercise a bit or eat a bit healthier or both.

Try to live as awareness, not as human. The pain is perceived as dangerous by the human. For awareness, it is another sensation you can be curious about.

@Dodoster Thanks, healing that pain with awareness sounds quite interesting. I will try and practise this, I might even be able to see this fear and pain as a challenge to grow, Your response gave me some true hope.
