Who cares about Brazil anyway. They have worse problems to deal with. The crime rate is way too high for example.

I care.

Me too. The world does not revolve around the United States (which, by the way, also has high crime rates).

An example of a billionaire believing he's above the law.

Brazil is aligning authoritarian and with BRICS so the ban on free speech doesn't surprise me procedurally, but it also does, because X somewhat aligns with Brazil's trajectory.

Not at all. The Supreme Court successfully stopped a literal coup d'etat from the military and the alt-right, which Elon Musk would love because Bolsonaro, the guy who was stopped is his bitch.

Brazil did a better job fighting fascism than the US, Bolsonaro is ineligible and will sooner or later be arrested.

The alt-right is systematically attacking the Supreme Court, especially this one judge called Alexandre de Moraes who did the most work until now.

There isn't a "ban on free speech," but there is a war against fake news on social media like Twitter, and Elon Musk (not surprisingly) decided not to comply with the judicial orders, hence Twitter being blocked after Musk reiteratedly disobeying judicial orders.

I must admit I haven't kept up on Brazil or south America as closely as other countries or regions, especially this last year, with all my focus being in Ukraine - Russia, the Middle East , and East Asia too, as well as domestic politics I don't have as much time as I used to, to keep up.

I will have to revisit that topic before I answer but I appreciate the adjustment, it makes more sense now.

That's cool, i don't know much about other countries either but since 2018 (the election of Bolsonaro, "our Trump") I have been more and more obsessed with understanding Brazil's politics. I also have a Law degree, so it helps me understand politics.

Its also banned in China, but you won't hear a peep from Elon about this because that's were his Tesla manufacturing happens, and not in America!

I think instead of free speech, it should be fair speech.

I think people advocating for the right of absolute freedom of speech dont actually understand the danger of propaganda, its literally a tool of war. Its been used in the past to great effect and now with social media its on steroids. So to just allow potential bad actors, dictators etc to just spread misinformation freely can only lead to disastrous consequences. Part of the reason why so many are in this maga cult is because of propaganda, so we can see the effects of it real time.

The discussion around freedom of speech is interesting and nuanced but to not consider the negative of effects of it is very short sighted. Musk is taking advantage as much as hes allowed and im glad Brazil have shut him down. Hes actually very dangerous in terms of how he adds fuel to the fire of issues going on in other countries

I don't fully understand the freedom of speech argument here. Musk isn't defending freedom of speech, he is defending the power of non-democratic actors like himself in regulating speech online. At least the supreme court positions require clearing some barriers to entry regarding ethics, professionalism and they are held accountable based on an agreed upon law. Mr. Musk has his position of power due to wealth and influence, which has nothing to do with democratic processes. Musk here wants to resist the rules of democratic nations to hold more power.

Yet at the same time I was quite surprised and concerned about the suggestion to give a 9000$ fine on anyone caught using VPN to access twitter. That really is a very radical move, even China doesn't have such laws.

When you hear all the silly excuses for why free speech is too dangerous, it underlines the reason for free speech.

Fair to who? You or me? Who decides what is fair?

That's $9000 USD. It's my understanding that this is a year's salary in Brazil. So it's even more radical still. It seems like a cartoonish outburst from an immature child.

@Paradoxed, If you noticed, your questions are the answers. At least fairness is treated as a relative thing.

With great power comes great irresponsibility.
