Should women be in the military?

14 posts in this topic

What is your opinion about women being in the military. The fate for men in the military if they fall in enemy lines is direct death whereas for women it can be endless gangrapes before final death. Considering this should women really be in the military just for the sake of equality?

Jordan Peterson eloquently discusses this point at minute 24:55 in the video with Tulsi Gabbard.

If you're caught in a war, then you are already in a worse situation.

Men can be tortured; why doesn't JP mention that? Do they deserve that?

If a woman wants to be in the military, she should understand the consequences.

What do you think should be the social role in understanding these consequences? This is mostly what JP was alluding to in the video.

@Buck Edwards  It can be just as equally brutal for men as you could be facing endless torture. I don’t think you can say it’s worse for one sex over the other

Women feel more afraid and vulnerable so there is that. Ultimately it’s a decision people make when they join the armed forces. Everyone should be aware of the risks rather than sold a glorified fantasy of war and conflict

@Buck Edwards

I think I might have misunderstood about the "social role" you're saying, but I'll reply anyway.

I was talking about people wanting to fight during the war.

I don't think that much about who should have which role. I'm more than fine with a person who wants some role that people don't think is or isn't supposed to be for him/her.

No, women aren't built for war. It's genetic and going against that is stupid. We could say that what is stupid is war, but well, it exists. It is an activity carried out exclusively by men since the origins of humanity. Yes, ok, some woman, in some case, has had the very strange tendency of wanting to be on a battlefield where thousands of people kill each other with axes and so on. The fact is that this tendency has been absolutely common among men of all times and cultures.

The war is dying out, or that seems to be the trend, the ideal would be for it to disappear, but if it happens......well, do you think that the people who are throwing bombs at each other in Ukraine could be women? It seems like an idea with little prospect of success for the side that adopts it.

Nobody should be in the military against their will.

@Something Funny, I would like that, but in less developed countries, it doesn't work like that unless you have a serious physical or psychological condition.

@Breakingthewall, war doesn't care about that.

Isn't it interesting that, as you think, men wage wars and then don't like it when their physically vulnerable people get hurt. Maybe men shouldn't start wars, and women, as you say, who aren't genetically built for it wouldn't even join the military.

Sure, but war is a human constant. tribe, monarchy, democracy, empire, oligarchy, gangs, communism, fascism, theocratic state, secular, whatever may vary, war does not, it always happens

@Breakingthewall, women are either directly or indirectly involved in war, despite it being a human constant. Women's war may not be physically violent like men's. Although some women may like to fight violently.

In less developed countries gender equality doesn't work either. I thought the question  was what is the right thing to do.

I think women can specialize as diplomats and roles of that sort better than men.

A physics professor of mine once told me that he regretted the fact that he had four brothers and no sisters.  His argument was that his brothers were quarrelsome and it was hard to bring them on the same page or align them together. He felt that if he had a sister , she could have played a cohesive role in bringing the brothers together in harmony and peace.
