Does the present exist?

21 posts in this topic

Do you believe there is such a thing as the "present" or the "now"?

It appears to me like we certainly are living in the past.  And I do not mean this vindictively or negatively.  Even in our traditional terms used to describe the nature/reality of us we understand that we are made up of all the things that have happened before us, all the things our ancestors have done as well as the history of the environment we share, such as the planet's conditions throughout time.  We are the present tense of the past.  We are the most current past.

Is there a temporal nature for the real "present state"?  This kind of present state would be describing the actual interaction, the actual occurrence, etc.  Well we believe that the physical property of it does have duration, and yet we define that matter can not be created or destroyed, which supports that the "duration" of it is about the particular state of it, but not necessarily the true actuality of it.  "True actuality" meaning: even though matter may change states, we understand that it is not eliminated from existence.  So in this sense, a temporal nature does not seem to be present.  If something can not be created or destroyed, it is beyond our conventional terms for time.

Some people think of these ideas as a limitation of the human system but what if it is the opposite?  What if the way the physical human body works is extremely effective, even state-of-the-art, one of the most complex existence has to offer?

In other words, what if the only way to experience an absolute is through the delay/lag?  The brain must support some kind of process and identity that defines things in terms of separation or generally as distinctions.  If the brain did not do this and if matter did not do this there would be no recognition.  There would be no distinction of anything, no distinction between things.  We wouldn't be able to say "this is made up of this and that is made up of that" etc.

If we use the speed of light as a measuring reference, then anything less than the speed of light is the past, a history, and anything less than the speed of light is all the physical existence we know of.

The end of separation is the end of desire. It’s life, it’s death, it’s unity; it is the absolute. In this profound realization, we find perfection eternal, a state of everlasting harmony.

When via a meditation, an exercise of contemplation, a self-inquiry process, perhaps a psychedelic experience - find yourself merging with the Universal Life, your True Self, pure Beingness and nothing else - that is when Time seem to stop and the NOW becomes the link to the Eternal PRESENT.

Otherwise you are experiencing what you described in your post. And you are perfectly correct - for several reasons - to say that what seem the present is actually more like a reflection of the past.

If you consider that you shape your life through the decisions you make - everything you perceive in your life now is the result of decisions you made in the past.

If you consider that everything you see and hear travels at either the speed of light or the speed of sound you would realize that by the time you perceive something you are perceiving something that occurred an instant before, therefore the past.

If you consider how perception function you would realize that everything you perceive is from a learning that occurred in the past.

Also if you consider every single thought about the future can only be formed from past experiences; you would also realize that all that which we think about the future is only a reflection of the past.

However if you ask yourself  WHO or WHAT is perceiving all that which you perceive- and you fully realize the ANSWER to that question - you will find a PRESENCE that can only exist in an ETERNALLY PRESENT MOMENT.

From phenomenology the specious present a useful way to look at our perception of now.

I don't even know what will happen after 2 minutes from now. The thought that I do is a complete illusion. Anything could happen.

There isno past no future no present . If you observe carefully what's happening in direct experience you will see that nothing really exist .

All apparently solid forms (like a rock for example) eventually will lose its form and turn into something else . This shows that it wasn't there to begin with . It's nothing appearing as something.

my mind is gone to a better place.  I'm elevated ..going out of space . And I'm gone .

 Exactly!.

The universe might end this very second..that's a fact.  You can't prove that everything won't just disappear boom gone this very second. No you can't.  You want to believe it can't. But it most certainly can.

What the fuck is holding everything together anyways?..xD

Just a creepy thought. Pulling it out of my stuffy subconscious.  And be sure you can find thousands of such creepy thoughts.

When you understand this you might want to consider to let go of a lot of bullshit that you think you know.

If nothing really exist, what Universe will end? Also you said there's no past, no future, no present. How does something vanish without time. That's a process. No? What would vanish. What's the Universe. Where is it located for it to vanish. Please make your wild assumptions all come together and make sense at least.

Observation requires movement of time - past and present and something to compare it to. What does your observation consist of. How does one observe, by looking...how is someone observing without past, present future and to call those observations accurate. In 2 minutes worth of remarks you have said so many contradictory things that it's obvious you're not even understanding what you're saying.

I dont know. Maybe I know more than I think I know about such things and I am just not aware of my knowledge because it is too obvious to me. But it's true that I sucpect highly that I cant know that and you are most definitely right that I logically cant tell that.

Yeah when you become aware how you dont know such core things about reality it really puts into question the validity of the "truths" you think you know as they arise from those basic core things you have no clue about.

You see ..any form of life will inevitably die..agree  ?including your physical body which we know will eventually pass on
But the ever existent conscious state that the physical body came from will always exist and the conscious essence that the
body came from is ever present. And what that is ..is nothingness

So we Humans..(or any life form for that matter)can not die completely ..It simply returns to the primal and forever existing nothing.

The universe exists and doesn't exist simultaneously.  You are not awake so you are deluded by maya.

Nothing will end. Something is nothing. I am actually speaking from direct experience this time whooo 🥳, I actually had the insight that everything even the most hard/ solid things are really nothing.

Great reply, but the concept of nothing is just a comparative value of things that do exist, where basically we need a term that represents some kind of opposite value of “to exist”. In the most simple and straight forward sense: there must be something in order to consider that there is nothing.

Remember “nothing” is not an actual thing, nobody will ever investigate “a nothing” because “a nothing” is not anything to investigate.
