Why is mastery by george leonard said to be the greatest self improvement book

28 posts in this topic

What is so special about it. Why advantage does it have over other greate books.

It is made by observing akido. What we do is knowledge work. Akido and knowledge work are 2 totally different things. In order to excel in knowledge work , you need a book that is made by observing knowledge work and not based on observing sports like Akido . Mastery by george leonard is not optimal for knowledge work

I read it once and it’s just a great book about a core components to creating whatever you want. Commitment and responsibility.

I support that it is the best self-improvement book. It makes you aware of how anti-mastery society is and inspires you to value and enjoy the entire mastery process. It was a complete lifechanger for me.

The best self-help book is the one you learn from and more importantly the one who's concepts and advice you integrate into your life. Mastery is a great book because its concept is relatively simple but impactful (long-term effort and reward > short-term effort and reward).

In my experience, you only really integrate one or two concepts/advice from any given book read. Mastery is mostly all about just this one concept.

It's a decent book especially when you consider that the book was written more than 30 years ago.

It's general self help stuff in general mixed with some good techniques esp on attaining mastery. But I don't remember much of the book. Guess the book needs re-reading!

@Ramanujan

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't that Robert Green that made Mastery and The 48 Laws of Power?

Robert greene also has a book called mastery

Here I was talking about mastery by george leonard

I like that it really emphasizes the value of sticking with your pursuit of mastery, your craft, and almost "getting married" to it. Too much of the time people pick things up and drop or leave it for the next shiny thing, there is so much value in finding something that is your "thing", your passion, and going all in and mastering that thing. It then makes mastering other parts of life almost seamless

For me, mastery was a book that opened my eyes to how much effort and hard work it takes to master something. As a matter of fact, the mastery process is infinite, it is never done.

It also introduced me to the concept of "plateauing." This is when you are training a skill and it feels like you're not getting any better. But in reality, in the midst of a "plateau" there will soon be a breakthrough. These breakthrough moments are incredibly fulfilling.

with all due respect

only leo recommends mastery by george leonard. outside of leo, no one recommends it . Leo is not an expert on productivity and getting success. Leo is not an expert . Those who are experts in productivity and acheiving success never recommend mastery by george leonard. they recommend other books

This was such a huge key for me as well. Having that distinction really keeps you going

Yes exactly, trust in the principle that the hard work will pay off. The plateaus will happen frequently and they don't mean you're not making progress.

Mastery by george leonard is a nice book. But it is not the best book when it comes to practical application

It is nice

But not the best

It has problems in practical application

Wish i knew it back in the days

It is made by observing akido. A sport. Knowledge work is different. Knowledge work has some similarity with sport but u need a system designed for knowledge work .

there are people out there who laser focus on the topic of success. they just read 1000 book on success . they do not dwelve into meditation or yoga or psychidelic or emotional healing. they put all their effort on success category . and none of them recommend mastery by  george leonard

mastery by george leonard is a nice book. its fantastic . but it is not the greatest of all time imo

Mastery by george leonard is not the best book for knowledge book . The best book for knolwedge work is Getting things done or 7 Habits or other classics . Mastery by george leonard is like trying to fit a square into a cirle hole. People will feel disjoint when using it for knolwedge work
