Close to Direct Experience

In the event of not being able to directly experience something, what other thing can come close to it? Observation? Or any other? Or a combination of some other things?

Or no other way than to directly experience something?

Let's say I want to give a public talk tomorrow and I am nervous, anxious, and stressed about it. How can I get into touch with the emotions that I'd feel the next day beforehand? Is something like this possible? 

As I was writing this, another thought came to me. Is observation is more or less a thought? Observation is knowledge, and knowledge influences thoughts. So basically observation is thought minus the emotional charge?
