Being polite and respectful is a good thing in general.

Traditional cultures put greater importance on respecting elders. Where modern societies tend to value material possessions and youth. The more modern we get the more isolated from our families, communities, and nature we are. There are trade offs to progress.

If  the old person behave like a teenager or like a child like many Man-child. For me dosent matter if he have 50,60,70 years old, I will deal with him based on his present development stage. Of course with compassion since many Old people are locked on their limited bubble and had a different infancy and learning oportunities than me. Normaly approach with respect but a balance of Tolerance and Truthfullness. I called many elder people to their Bullshit many times.

age should confer a higher status so be nicer to your elders than your peers

nicer just means being sensitive and patient to the older generation to try to communicate without any misunderstandings

polite is just the smart politics of getting along

if they aren't nice back then give them no more time

Because culturally and historically it is understood that youth should express respect towards elderly, as we are literally living in the world that they have created and contributed to..

They have been your age and know what it's like to be that young. They experienced youth before you did. Least you can do is show some respect or politeness!

I speak politely to everyone regardless of age.......until you piss me off; but I'll think twice and try to bite my tongue if they're elderly.

It is a belief system. Different cultures have different beliefs. Some like you described believe elderly should be addressed differently as a sign of respect. I don't see anything inherently wrong with this but your own personal situation could make you see things differently.

You can talk to people however you like, just be prepared to face the truth of the consequences :)
